De huidige bewoners van Nederland maken tezamen ruim een kwart uit van het totaal aantal Nederlanders. In de eerste eeuwen was Nederland nog dunbevolkt. In de 219 jaar tussen 1581 en 1800 werd Nederland bevolkt door in totaal 14 miljoen mensen. Vanaf Willem van Oranje, gedurende de Gouden Eeuw én de hele daaropvolgende eeuw, leefden er dus minder Nederlanders dan momenteel in het land.
De ondertekening van het Plakkaat van Verlatinghe in 1581, waarmee afstand wordt genomen van de Spaanse koning Filips II, wordt wel gezien als de onafhankelijkheidsverklaring van Nederland.
