Just wanted to introduce myself, I have been interested in history and family research nearly 30 yrs and have been actively researching my history for just over 17 yrs. I am interested in getting involved in this community but am slowly dipping my toes in as I have been hesitant to use tools where everything I do is public even though I love the aspect of collaboration. I looking forward to reading and getting opinions from those of you that either transitioned your reaseach to this tool or just use this as a second place to house your tree for additional research. Thanks! -Josh

Hi Joshua,

Welcome to WikiTree! There are a number of awesome people here who can help you with skills for building your tree, like developing biographies, in-line sourcing and proper sources. There are various groups in which you can participate that will also help with Wiki-skills building!

Thanks Carol. So far, I'm interested but I'm doing more browsing and feeling it out. I'm ready yet to upload my gedcom file. How long have you been using wikitree? What program or tool did you start out using prior to this platform? Thanks for responding! -Josh

Josh:

Welcome to WikiTree. With all your experience in researching your family tree, we are lucky to have you. There are many helpful volunteers who can answer any questions that you have. I hope that you enjoy getting involved in WikiTree. There is a lot to learn, but I have found that learning the system has definitely been worth it.

Thanks! I'm just floating around at the moment. I haven't added much only my parents, my wife, and her parents. I spent some time searching around and it appears the first common ancestor I could find in either of our direct paternal lines was my wife's 4th great grandfather, which I really didn't know how to start discussing things corrections. So I chose to send the profile manager a private message stating the basic jist above, and continued with a list of facts that I've gathered over my time researching in hopes to open conversation. A) I didn't want to start out as a rookie submitting corrections to somemone... lol. B) I wasn't sure I knew how. C) I figured I would try a soft approach.

I look forward to learning. I like what this has to offer but I don't see it as being  my primary tool just yet. Already, I'm loving the interaction of the community, which I'm missing from my research currently. Fortunately, my brother researches  as well and started about 8-10 yrs before me. We get to bounce a lot of ideas off of each other.

Josh
