I understand the use of categorization.

What I don't know is how we can use categories.  More precisely, is there a way to search for specific categories . . . like if we want to connect with researchers who are working on ancestors in the same village, county, or whatever?

The one-place studies would be more in line with what you are seeking, I think.  One Place Studies

However, you can search categories. Go to Category: Categories  which is the beginning page of the Category hierachies. At the top of the page, in teeny-tiny print is a link to "Category Search." Click on that link then you will get a page with a search box on it.

Or you can go to the dropdown menu 'Find' and 'Categories' is the first item.
Ros, that's the page my link takes her to.
Just a different way to get to the same place. :)

Mary, another way to find categories is to click on the search button you use when doing a surname search (except don't put a name in). this takes you to the advanced search page. Scroll down to the bottom "Search for any text." Choose Categories. Type in the location you're looking for a category for. I typed in Rowan County, North Carolina and it gave me several categories for this particular location.

Another way to search categories is when you're editing an existing biography or space page. There is an icon that looks like a bunch of connected boxes. Click on that, and start typing. If a category exists that partially matches what you're typing, it'll pop up.
