Veterans day

Haven't seen too many Veteran's day posts here ... and, yep, I know, it's probably just a USA celebration day and, duh, this is a genealogy site ... lol.  Anyway, hats off and salutes to all the veterans out there.

Lost one of my best friends who died in Viet Nam like 50 years ago ... we got drafted out of graduate school at the same time.  Still haven't gotten organized enough to get to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin to visit his grave.  Time is gettin' short so I need to do that ... goin' to be tough ... hell, I'm sittin' here right now cryin' my eyes out ... I need a slap to the side of my head.

Bob, you don’t need a slap on the side of your head. You are obviously a nice guy and for 50 years you have been missing your best friend. Sorry that today has been a hard day for you. When I got a draft notice, I was glad I was a girl. When the notice came that I had not registered,  and they were coming to arrest me for draft evasion—I was concerned, but my mother just sat on the sofa. Her comment was “I just want to see the looks on there faces when they come.” Guess she figured the long nails and false eyelashes was a clue. Hope I was able to brighten your evening a little.

Thanks, Alexis.  That made me giggle a little.  Nice to see that the Science is sometimes irrefutable.

Bob - I feel for you. I was in Desert Storm and while I'll be the first to admit that if you had to pick one conflict to be a part of, that was the one. But when I got back, I joined my local VFW and spent quite a bit of time with the vets, especially the Vietnam era guys. I've seen quite of few of them pass in the years I've worked with the VFW, and it's never easy. So many memories of the times together, and not all of them good or pleasant to remember. But sometimes the bonds forged in war are ones that we remember more clearly than anything else.

It wasn't clear to me if you and your friend actually served together or were just drafted together, but either way, my sympathies go out to you as it is clear to me that he and you were close at one time.
