True ancestry of William Ogilvie 1794 - 9 Dec 1850 Cape of Good Hope equerry to Lord Somerset

Some people say his mother was Elspeth Wilson, but her child born two months later in 1794 was a daughter named Christian.  When the head of the clan died without an heir in the 19th century, the Norton grandchildren (children of Mary Ann Ogilvie Norton Nourse) were approached about taking over the position.  They declined,  An Ogilvie from New Zealand took on the duties.  Could William Ogilvie have been an illegitimate child of the head of the clan?  Did his mother ever emigrate from Glasgow to Cape Town?

Hi Hughen,

There is a Find-A-Grave memorial that looks like it is the same person son of William Ogilvie and Elspet Wilson but has a birth date of 6 Jun 1795.

Unfortunately the photo of the gravestone is covered in shadows and difficult to read.

ScotlandsPeople website has children of William Ogilvie and Elspet Wilson baptised at Banff, including William baptised 18 Jun 1795 and a daughter Christian baptised 12 Aug 1793.  There are quite a few other children all baptised 2 years apart; John 1783, Anne 1785, James 1787, Margaret 1789, Isobal 1791, Christian and William as above, and finally George 1797.

I'm not sure which clan you mean when you talk about head of the clan?  According to Wikipedia the current clan chief for the Ogilvy/Ogilvie clan is the Earl of Airlie and I presume his ancestors have been clan chief for generations?

Thank you John, for providing those dates.  That certainly clears up the confusion.  Our incorrect date seemed to come from a partially obscured grave marker in Cape Town.
