Sorting Out the Mayflower Letters from FamilySearch

This past weekend, in the various online Mayflower Groups I am a part of, I have seen a ton of brand new members posting that they have received a letter from FamilySearch showing that they are Mayflower descendants. Unfortunately, when these new members share their lines to the groups, I have seen about half of them disproved within the first three generations. It frustrates me that FamilySearch sent these messages out, making it look like the FamilySearch tree is proof of descent. I am sure their goal was to generate interest in their website, but at what cost to their genealogical integrity? I have seen FamilySearch described as "copying off of the dumbest kid in the class." Personally, I describe it as being like the ever-changing staircases at Hogwarts.

I am glad to see a renewed interest in learning more about Mayflower ancestors, but I feel terrible for those who are being given false hope with an error-riddled tree. Those of us who have the resources to verify and/or disprove lines need to be prepared to help these newbies through the process. We would love to have them all as members of our extended family, but we need to do our best to make sure everyone is basing their lines on accurate information. So, those of you who are involved in the Mayflower families, please keep an eye out for newbies wandering around with a letter from FamilySearch that they think is proof. They're going to need our help.

Here here!  I received the same sort of message from FamilySearch, which showed incorrect information based on an unsourced tree, instead of either correct option.  I was worried this might indicate that FamilySearch has sent out a wave of misinformation, and that does seem to be the case.

I support your response whole-heartedly. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, Sandra!

i wonder if this is connected to an American Ancestor email i got which reads in part

We are proud to announce the launch of the new searchable database: General Society of Mayflower Descendants Membership Applications, 1620-1920. This is the first time GSMD applications are available as an online searchable database. This is the result of a three-year collaboration between American Ancestors, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, and FamilySearch International.

Now, with an American Ancestors membership (Individual level or higher), you can access 4.5 million names in an easily searchable indexed format and reveal your family's connection to the Pilgrims. etc etc

No. The AmericanAncestors database is a cool new source of secondary information. Being secondary, it needs verification before you start tossing it around as truth.

But FamilySearch is not connected to American Ancestors. If you have hooked yourself up to the FS global tree by creating a profile for yourself, and they spotted a link in that tree to a Mayflower Passenger, they sent you a letter. I have never created a profile for my relatives to link to the tree, so I didn’t get this letter. In retrospect, it is funny that they were willing to give me source page editing priveleges when I never connected myself to their tree.
I, too received a notice that I was linked to James Chilton - which I quickly disproved,   Totally inappropriate!
A friend of mine got a notification from FamilySearch that she was related to Francis Cooke. She went to check, then FamilySearch said the Mayflower family info wasn't available.

Turns out she was connected to Francis Cooke at all.

Seems like a marketing ploy gone awry for FamilySearch...
I also was notified by Family Search of Mayflower ancestry, through my paternal grandmother's line.  They specified each person, beginning with William Brewster, his daughter, etc.  Since I haven't traced that ancestry, I can't verify the accuracy of the Family Search notification.
