Y-DNA propagation and Unlisted

+5 votes
If a male WikiTree user adds their Y-DNA information to their profile then should it propagate up his direct paternal line even if his father is still living and thus Unlisted in WikiTree?

If a Y-DNA testee’s father is living and unwilling to join WikiTree then he is a able to block his son from effectively using his Y-DNA test in WikiTree. Similarly, if an mtDNA testee’s mother is living and unwilling to join WikiTree then she is able to block her child from effectively using their mtDNA test in WikiTree.

Is this something that can be solved with how WikiTree propagates yDNA and mtDNA to ancestors' profiles? Is it a bug? Or is the only solution to talk the person's father or mother into joining WikiTree?
Is auDNA not also affected in this way?
It doesn't seem to affect auDNA.

Hi Peter,

Can you share an example in which you are seeing a living non-member parent that stops the propagation of Y-DNA or mtDNA test info? Here are examples of Y-DNA and mtDNA test-takers with a corresponding living non-member parent (unlisted profile) and for which the test info appears to propagate through the living non-member parent to the appropriate paternal/maternal ancestral line profiles:

Jerimy Abner > unlisted father > Gordon (Bowling) Abner (paternal grandfather)

Michael Abracham > unlisted mother > Eva Meleo (maternal grandmother)

Also please keep in mind that for Y-DNA and mtDNA the test-taker must have their own profile privacy set to Private with Public Tree or higher for their test info to propagate to the appropriate ancestors. auDNA test info propagates regardless of the test-taker's profile privacy level. See the DNA FAQ for details.

This is an area of code that is currently being worked on, and it should work regardless of whether the parents are unlisted or not IMHO.

It does show now. The problem is the same as in https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1140367/why-is-my-dna-test-not-showing-3xgreat-grandfathers-profile post.

We are close to resolving that problem. I finished the solution yesterday. Now it is in testing phase and will be moved to the production in a few days.
