Trying to make a connection and unable to find records. May have burned in a rectory fire - common parish (St Paul) Norfolk where many family were baptised lost records during the 1940s in a fire pertaining to year of birth (1745) for missing ancestor. Trying to figure out who the parents of my ancestor were.

Here is where it gets weird:

My 5 times great grandfather, Matthew Buscall Plumstead -

Parents of record were Augustin Plumstead and Ann Phillis (sometimes Philles) Buscall.  Erroneous wiki tree data lists her as Ann Buscan (working on fixing that)...Anyway -

This Augustin, husband of Ann has census data indicating birth in 1780 and death in 1814. Found record of marriage too but Augustin is sometimes spelled "Augusten" or even "Gustus"...

Census data from family search indicates parents of "Augustin" were "Augustine and Mary Underwood" - Ms Underwood I can trace back several generations before - but -

This father Augustine being born in 1745 and census data indicates death the same year as his son, in 1814. However I can find NO record of who Augustine's parents were.

I have searched every parish, every transcript, the domesday book, the many augustine's who seem to come back in search in regards to Trinity College 'ejection' don't seem to align with year of birth for either Augustin or Augustine. It was around this generation that the name may have switched in spelling from Plumsted, to Plumstead - but exhaustive searches of all data sites of all possible combinations of names were of no result.

I am but a few links away from figuring out who we tie into the "Plumstead/Plumsted" lineage.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Attached fan chart from family search starting with Matthew Buscall Plumstead with attached relevant census data.

Hi Jenni. What census data are you referring to? Sorry I'm not familiar with FamilySearch fan charts, and I can't see it there. My understanding is that the first comprehensive census in England was in 1841, so wouldn't include information back to 1814.
In my haste I misspoke just a bit! I meant parish records! I Have been using old parish records from the uk reg online - to determine who is the parent of whom. And was able to do this consistently til about Augustine of 1745 - the parish they commonly seemed to use was St Paul - and they had a rectory fire in the 1940s which destroyed parish records of the year in question, which is why I think I may have hit this 'brick wall'! The family fan chart on family search - does use census data to make connections - which is how I was able to get from myself back to Matthew Buscall Plumstead! Hope that clarifies a bit.

There's a St Paul's Norwich baptism record on Ancestry that reads "1746...Plumstead Augustin Son of Augustin & Marebol Nov 1" (6th line from bottom). Could that be him? If there was a delay before baptism, this Augustin could have been born in 1745.

I COULD HUG YOU JIM! hahaha...Looking back to his burial record, 1745 was only an estimate of year of birth! I think you may have solved this mystery for me. Though dictation of names can be awful, I found many records of "Marabella" (or something close to that Marrabell in a couple places), who first married someone by the last name Cubitt, was widowed, then married Augustin(e) - they seem to have had several children - but this one record you've provided here is truly a missing link.

Thru family search I was able to determine that Augustine and Marabella had other children, William, Susanna, Eliza,  but couldn't find this particular record in those searches, though it seems clear between that data and yours- they also had Augustine, and is the ONLY recorded birth of someone by that name in any 5 year span in either direction of my ancestor.

Going back farther, (SO MANY AUGUSTINES ! LOL)! I found a birth record for what may have been Augustine, husband of Marabell - is the only one that has a year of birth for an Augustine Plumstead/Plumsted that would make sense - and parents were Owen and Judith -

If I can confirm this, it means I will be able to draw a line back to the particular branch of the Plumstead tree to which my family belongs! I have been trying to figure this out for over a month now.

THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH! :)
Great, Jenni! I'm glad I was able to be of help. Good luck extending back even further.
