Calling England Project: Elizabeth Council Dulverton Hardy?

England, can you please help us out again? PGM emigrant John Hardy had a wife named Elizabeth.  Anderson doesn't recognize any maiden name or origins for her. But she's strangely attached to a Dulverton father although her maiden name is listed as Council. She may have been confused with a woman who married John Hardy of Virginia.

before we detach her from her parents and change her LNAB, though, we thought we'd seek your help in finding out if there was such a woman, daughter of the English Dulvertons. If so, we would detach her as Hardy's wife and mother of his children instead. Can you help us please?

I believe that the Drake family were connected with Combe Sydenham, Francis Drake (Sir Francis of Armada fame)  married Elizabeth Sydenham in 1585, this is less than 20 miles from Dulverton.
There have been a lot of spurious attachments of Francis Drake. Care should  be taken.

I find no such person. Seems to be fictitious. Dulverton is apparently a place in Somerset, not a family in Kent.

I see that the profile of her purported father has a note saying they can't be found.

Thanks, Lois, although I see no such comment on the profile of her father.  Please clarify.

Research Notes

Brown-13495 15:04, 25 July 2018 (UTC) No trace can be found of Elizabeth Drake to a Dulverton, or any possible baptism of a Dulverton in the right period - FamilySearch, FreeReg, FindMyPast

At least one tree on Ancestry, where this mess originated, seems to think that Elelyn Dulverton was the mother of Olive Council

There was an Elizabeth Counsell born 21 Jul 1597 to William Counsell, in Somerset. Lois said that Dulverton is in Somerset, that is possibly where the confusion comes in. She could have been Elizabeth Counsell and had lived in Dulverton.

This is the image of the Parish Registry for Elizabeth Counsell.

I could not find an Elizabeth Dulverton or any varied surname within 10 years either way of her listed date of birth. I checked all of England.

I have recently some across a number of Scottish persons where their place of birth is listed immediately after their last name, and subsequent researchers have labelled them as firstname lastname placeofbirth, making it appear as though the place of birth was their last name, or part of it. An example would be Charles McGinty Abercrombie - where Abercrombie, Fife, was their birthplace not their name.  (A made up name.)

Could this be the case with Elizabeth Council/Counsell/choose your spelling here?
That is what I was thinking. I believe that she may have been Elizabeth Counsell of/from Dulverton. Someone along the way probably confused that.

Yes, the spellings often vary especially in that time period. That's why I always look at various spellings.
It would help us an awful lot if our forebears had added the little word "of" between the last name and the place name -- or a comma (did commas exist back then?) -- just for clarity.
They started using the comma in the very late 1400's. Several countries used the variation's of "of/from" for a long time. We still have a lot of names like that, the ones that start with d', de', von, van, etc.
Thanks, Laura.
You are welcome, Jillaine.

I believe the Elizabeth Drake-3103 shown originally as the mother was meant to be Drake-1803, Elizabeth Council Drake, mother of Hodges Council of Virginia.

A merge is in order.
by Lois Tilton G2G6 Pilot (172k points)
No, please. Well, at least please do not merge the New England Hardy couple (or his wife) with the Virginia couple.

Now, if you're talking about the previously attached parents being duplicates, by all means, go for it; we've detached them from the New England wife.
I have found the records for Drake-3103 and edited her profile, so no merge is necessary.

Drake-1803, otoh, has no evidence for her marriage to John Council and should be detached. She may be the same person as Drake-6002, and as such should be merged.

Comments have been left on her profile and on John Council's profile.
