Challenge of the week: Clean up as many location names as possible [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge? This week's challenge focuses on location fields.

Aleš has prepared a report of profiles from around the tree that have potential suggestions in their locations. These are usually simple typos that are easy to fix. But a thinking genealogist needs to give them a quick "reality check" and consider the intent of the original member and the sources before making any changes. Will you try some?

To participate in the challenge:

  1. Post an answer below to let us know. This helps us coordinate and cheer each other on.
  2. Click to the list of suggestions and drill down to find ones you can fix or dismiss.
  3. After making a change, click the "challenge tracker" button and then the edit the status. This will record a point.

The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the "WINNER" badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

Post if you have any questions about how to participate. Thanks for helping!

PS If you want to chat or coordinate what you are working on with others, in addition to this G2G post there is a handy spreadsheet courtesy of Steven Tibbetts.

I'm not going to do this. Its FAR too much work!

I've been "bit" far too many times by people doing this to their own data, let alone data of others. They see a location that looks just a tiny bid odd, and change it to the standard.

But the original was correct, just a different place.

Also,  I've seen far too many people listed as dying where they lived, whereas they died elsewhere.
I have done this before and I find the choices to be hard to make.  Mine is just a guess.  I don't want to clean up place names that make no sense to me.  Also, names change over time and the original might be the best.
The report is behind on listing the corrections needed.  I checked the easy ones and they are already corrected.  When does the report get updated?
Next week. But by that time, also the challenge will be over.

I have been working on some of those that have both England and Wales in the location as I am involved in both projects.

There are too many without sources stating England or Wales that are people who emigrated.

In the England and Wales Projects we can correct spellings but we don't have ability or time to work out which country ancestors came from when there are no sources.

I finally went gung ho on a weekly challenge and I am already over 300 for the week. I must admit I cherry picked some easy ones though.
