What is the best way to search for old pictures?

I know photography was fairly rare up until the 20th Century, but I am looking for any pictures that I can find of my ancestors that are already online. What is the best way/place tosearch. I am currently trying to find a picture of my GG Grandfather Thomas J Wagnon. He was in the Army during WWI, 12th Infantry Brigade. I am trying to find a picture of him but regular searches have not worked.

You could possibly go to Google Images https://images.google.com/

Type in his name or regiment within quotations.

I have tried that. His military assignment was rather obscure since they didn't actually go to fight. They were at Camp Fremont CA, but never got sent to action.

As Maggie has said google images is great. Other places to look are: Ancient Faces, Ancestry.com (excellent if you subscribe), Craig''s List under genealogy & Amazon under genealogy.

You might try these folks.  Golden Arrow Military Research while they do not have photos per se, I used them to track down details about my Uncle in WWII.  They were able to track his every movement during the war.  They may be able to provide you with details that could lead to sources to exlpore for photos.  They do charge for their services but for me it was well worth the price.

WOW!  That is an amazing amount of actual "results"!!!  I see that some (if not all) of the material came from the National Archives in St. Louis.  Does "Golden Arrow" charge one an arm and a leg to retrieve this and...would an individual researcher be able to get the same thing in person (or by mail)??

They are experienced researchers and know what reports the military files.  They search beyond what the National Archives checks.   I paid $200 for a report on my Uncle but it got me informtion I would not have found and what the NA would not check.   You can contact them to see how they charge.
