If you have an interest in Louisiana, there is now a new project, Louisiana_Families.

We do not a a badge yet - so if you are interested please review the project page - then ask - and you will be one of the first to receive one.  Be sure to add  Louisiana_Families to your followed tags.

Louisiana Families is a project focused on developing profiles and family groups in Louisiana. Our primary goal is to encourage everyone on Wikitree to find and connect with their cousins in Louisiana and by reviewing the profiles developed learn a little about Louisiana history.

In addition to finding connections, developing profiles and families the project has a heavy emphasis on the use of categorization.

Surveyor, land owner, planter John MILLIKEN of Milliken's Bend and his descendants (PARKERS).  I would love to have verified that John MILLIKEN was the grandson of Charles MILLIKEN of Connaught, Ireland as noted in the Rev. G.T. RIDLON's research.

I just tried to add [[Category: Louisiana Families]] to one of myTrauth profiles, but it is coming up red. Where do you do want this to lead? Please let me know ASAP, because I have a ton a Louisiana families on wikitree already.

Thanks!

Sharon

Sharon,

We have not created a category Louisiana Families - I think there are just to many profiles for that to work well.  We do have Category: Louisiana First Families  this category is for the earliest ancestor in Louisiana for each family.  Take a look a see if that is a place to start.

It is possilbe we could create a template for Louisiana famlilies but I'm not sure how valuable that would be.

HI Phillip,

Thanks for the quick reply. You are right, we would have thousands of families in a category like Louisiana Families.

I don't know if my Italian families would qualify for the Louisiana First Families category, since they came in the 1880s, but I am putting them in the correct parish categories. I believe the French ones would qualify, as they would have come following the 1763 transfer of Acadia into British hands. Do you have a date, as I am still trying to determine when my Germans came into Louisiana.

Thanks!

We might want to add categories like Italian Immigrants to Louisiana, French Immigrants to Louisiana, German Immigrants to Louisiana, etc. and put some flag templates differing as to what time period they came into the area.

Also, do we have a definition of the borders of Louisiana by time periods? Colonial Louisiana was larger than the state of Louisiana.

Thanks again!

Sharon

Sharon,

Categories for French, German and Italian imigrants to Louisiana are now set up.

The First family category is for those in the 1900 census or earlier for Louisiana.

The territory at this point is not defined, I think we work into that one.

Thanks Philip!
That was fun! Just added the template to my grandfather's line of Louisiana First Families.

Do not forget the Southern Colonies Project as a possible place to park as well.

I have Carrier/Carriere families in Louisiana as part of the Carrier Name Study, and many are prior to 1900.  Once you have things set up, I will add them to your project.

I have a Harrington cousin who went to Louisiana during the War of 1812 and did not return to Massachusetts. I don't know if he was killed, died, or decided to stay. Does anyone with Louisiana families have a Harrington in their tree?

Louisiana isn't really my area, so I won't be joining your group. But I did recall a small branch of the Fairchild family who found their way to New Orleans. So I went ahead and marked them. I wish you best on this endeavor. Louisiana's definitely got its own particular and unique history.
