Hi I'm writing to you from Ireland and looking for some general help. Is there any site I can go to for deaths, or Births/Mar? For example, if I knew that my relative died in NYC sometime in the 1930's, where could I go, besides Wiki/Ancestry/Family Search. Secondly, I found from the 1925 Census, that's it quite possible that a relative was an inmate in the Central Islip Mental Hospital. I just have the basic, facts. If her, she would be my Great Grandfather's sister-in -law. Would anyone know how I could go about finding out more? Just starting off, so I hope this is the right place to leave my general message. Regards, John.

Dear John,

There are some sites specific to New York City.   One great one is https://italiangen.org which has databases for births as well as marriages by groom’s or bride’s names.  Free. I cannot remember if there are deaths there.
The municipal archives in New York state have vital records of all kinds.  You may have difficulty determining which municipality has jurisdiction, and therefor the records.  Obtaining a copy costs money, usually about $30 US.  Some places can send you a copy by email, but some still mail a physical copy.
Don’t know about Central Islip Mental Hospital.  You might get more response to your questions if you post on the G2G section of WikiTree. Maybe with a New York label.
And the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society has free information included in their website:  https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org

For newspapers, there are four free sites I use:  New York State newspapers: https://fultonsearch.org/ or https://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html , NY State Newspapers https://nyshistoricnewspapers.org/ and Brooklyn Public Library https://bklyn.newspapers.com/
