Probably because in one document he is named Cubbon, yet in another document he is named Cubine.  Done like this, he appears in search results under both spellings.

Hi Patrick, and welcome to WikiTree. Thank you for introducing yourself in our g2g forum.  I would like to suggest that you upgrade to a family member, which is 100% free. You would then be able to add tags to your profile. Tags can be names and or locations of your ancestors. Once you have added those tags, you will be immediately connecred to other members of ancestry who are also researching those same names and locations that you are.  Who knows, you may be related to someone already on WikiTree.

Thank you for introducing yourself.  I hope you learn to love Wikirtee as much as I do.

You will find that a lot of older documents, like Pre 1900 Census Documents, will have numerous different spellings of surnames over different Census Years. This is usually due to the person who wrote down the information in relation to the phonetic sound of the name and it was spoken to them by the person being asked. In certain areas different accents would affect how a person would interpret the spoken name. This happened a lot in Wales, Ireland & Scotland. The literacy of people at the time would also affect this. You will also find ages are usually a few years either side of their actual birth year as they are estimate on the age given and the year the Census was taken. A lot of people in those times tended to give older or younger ages for unknown reasons. The best way to match people is to look at their occupations (if written) and locations and compare it to previous or other Census Documents. You will find numerous people with the same name will have spouses of the same first name too which leads to connections to incorrect lineage.
