I am looking for Chappell descendants who originally came from France.

The name Chappelle originally came from France and the name means " dwellers of the church ground": they were chappells as they took care of the grounds around the churches which indicates that perhaps at one time it was a title, not neccessarily a surname. I am trying to find my ancestors who may have lives and worked around the churches in France. So if anyone can direct me I would be very appreciative. I can be conatcted at:

I have a line of Chappelles. I suppose they might have originally been from France. I have only been able to go so far. It's a bit of a brick wall for me.

I've always heard that the name Chappell had its origins in the indviduals who carried saint's relics into battle with the French kings.  This may possibly be from Claude Henry Neufer's Names in South Carolina.  My father was an outstanding amateur geneologist, and I thinnk he had a copy of the book.  I've never tried to go back further than the Chappells in very early Virginia.
