Are you a cousin of mine? [closed]

I am looking for examples of consanguinity with other WikiTree genealogists. Not degrees of seperation, but a cousin via a common ancestor.

This is inspired by the global reunion and mainly for my own curiosity. I will also tweet some of the connections as part of the WikiTree ambassador project.

Let me know if we're related, and who is our common ancestor!

UPDATE: Added a table on my profile with all these cousin connections!

Hi PM, you and I are 15th cousins twice removed, and we have 129 common ancestors within 25 generations. Our common ancestor is William Skipwith, who is your 16th great grandfather, and my 14th. ~Pamela

9th Cousins once removed (9C1R) through Preserved Clapp-83
by Michael Stills G2G6 Pilot (523k points)
Awesome - thanks Michael! Robert Bartlett is another one. I suspect there are quite a few more in New England!
The new tool in the Relationship finder says we have 142 common ancestors.  But Robert is certainly one to develop. I suspect the majority of them are through closer ancestors like Perserved and Robert.
I hadn't noticed that 142 common ancestors feature, yet. That's cool!
Yeah, it really shows off the power of Wikitree to find cousins and to tap into the work others have done on the One World Tree idea.

we are 14th cousins, three times removed, common ancestor is Sir Robert Taillebois.  And was I surprised when I followed his ancestry!
by Foster Ockerman G2G6 Mach 3 (36.3k points)
Through Gateway Ancestors Colonel Reade and Anne Skipwith. That's really cool, Foster! I am working on a line through her to William the Conqueror right now. It's taking a while! :)
i missed the box with the number of common ancestors.  You and I have 125 together.  Fun.

Ok, so I'm really surprised. We are 12th cousins. Common ancestor is James Davis-941. Hello Cousin!
by Shirley Dalton G2G6 Pilot (530k points)
That's great, Shirley! Hello to you as well!

Davis-941 is someone I haven't researched myself, yet, but his profile appears to be very well sourced. He also looks like he should be in the Puritan Great Migration project.

Thanks for saying hello!
I haven't researched him either. One of the benefits of WikiTree; I just connected my gg grandmother, Mary Ann Cantrell, to a line that was already here. Really should take a look at that line.
Davis-941 has some interesting ancestry on WikiTree, too. Through is mother's Chandler family he appears to go to a Lord Mayor of London Tate-1546 and on to Stewart-1001, King of the Scots.

I'm very suspect of this (particularly as neither of us has researched it)... will add researching it to the 'to-do' list.

19th once removed through Brent-164. My Brents line is questionable and I'm awaiting materials to prove or disprove it, so maybe? smiley

Maybe is great! smiley

John Brent appears on the Gateway Ancestor list but his profile (Brent-219) isn't well sourced. Have you researched him? It appears his lines should be pretty well researched.

Let me know what the materials you're waiting on show. It will be fun, either way!

Well the questionable part starts with John's "grandson", John J. Brent-264 He appeared to live to be 110 for one thing and had a child at 71 for another?!?!?! I hadn't worked on that line at all but since it's been so hotly contested I'm beginning with Kentucky Genealogy and Biography which apparently holds some clues. It's on a truck headed this way!

excellent! yes

PM and Dale are 18th cousins once removed

This relationship is based on PM Eyestone and Dale Byers both being descendants of William Willoughby.

Interesting, Dale! 18th! That is going back a way!

A member of the Order of the Garter, William is one of my favorites!

17th cousins through Sir Robert Constable with 227 common ancestors!

by Elizabeth Hudman G2G3 (3.1k points)
That's very cool, Elizabeth.

And your line goes through Col. Peter Beverly. Have you researched him?

Constable-47 is in need of some TLC. That may be the longest profile I've seen!

16th cousin, once removed :-)
by Peter Roberts G2G6 Pilot (695k points)
Peter - That's cool! Aston-1 is a line that I'm very confiedent in through Lothrop-3 as it is one generation away from my Mayflower line. I have seen that he has an Aston grandmother on WikiTree but haven't researched that connection myself. This is a helpful reminder to get that on my to-do list!

10th cousins once removed, through Robert Cross and his wife Susanna (Anna) Jordan Cross -- ancestors I've never looked into.
by Ellen Smith G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Update:PM and I are now 10th cousins once removed via three different ancestral lines (Cross, Shattuck and Strong) and we are up to 300 common ancestors within 25 generations. Where will it all end?!?

Elizabeth Dinham, pretty cool :o)
by Ruth Hodges G2G5 (5.0k points)
That is a cool one, Bobby! She has quite a few interesting ancestors.

Winning!  I think I'm the closest so far - we're 7th cousins, three times removed.  Common ancestor is Joseph Sherman-1434.

That's kind of awesome with the three times removed part.  There have been a lot of really old parents on my line.

by Kyle Dane G2G6 Pilot (111k points)

Kyle, that is AWESOME! Joseph Sherman!

I have a Soc. Colonial Wars line to him pending right now. And how about his father and father-in-law Winship?

Roger Sherman is my "famous" ancestor along that line.

Kyle, you beat me by two steps 19 to 21.  And those two steps give you twice as many common ancestors.

We're 11th cousins three times removed. Common ancestor is John Howse (Howse-1). On that line, I've researched as far back as Abigail Newcomb (my 6 ggrandmother). Everyone beyond her was already here and I haven't confirmed the connections.
by Leanne Cooper G2G6 Mach 3 (37.9k points)
Very cool, Leanne! That is 2 generations away from my Mayflower line. Hannah Howse and John Lothrop are really well researched... but I haven't researched John Howse, either. I'll need to add him to my 'to-do' list!

We are 10th cousins once removed descended from a Henry Kimball.
by Toby Rockwell G2G6 Mach 2 (26.9k points)
Awesome, Toby!
I am also a descendant of Henry Kimball.

My relationship to Toby is closer, though, we're 8th cousins once removed.  Common ancestor is Theophilus Cushing.
Kyle, that's cool! Did you know you and Toby were cousins before?
I had a pretty good idea that he was, given that we've ended up working on profiles in the same families.

I wouldn't be surprised if I am a cousin of every person who answered this thread saying that they're your cousin.
Confirmed.  I went through everyone who has answered, and every one of them that I was able to check is my cousin also.  The only one I couldn't view was Dale Byers, whose tree is private.

The winner so far for closest relationship to me is Ellen Smith, who is my 7th cousin twice removed.
I have found that if you (your ancestry) are a member of a relatively stationary population for many generations in the 16th - 19th century, you are related to pretty much anyone else who is in the same population. PGMers, Aroostook long timers are ones I am familiar with (For example: I am 4th cousin to Senator Susan Collins on one side, and 7th cousin on the other; we are both Aroostook families - a relatively isolated county).

This is great, because we are, of course, descended from hundreds of ancestors which gives us access to a number of populations.

And, to prove the point, I just ran a relationship to Vic Watt - just because his comment was adjacent- and we are 9th cousins with removals.
Good point about the effect of stationary populations for many generations, Toby.

I don't have any known relations from Aroostook County, so you and are "only" 11th cousins, with a common ancestor back in England.

Wow!  Not only are we 8th cousins, with Thomaqs Flint (Flint-115) as our nearest common ancestor, but we have 278 common ancestors.  We should throw our own GFR.
by Vic Watt G2G6 Pilot (355k points)
Very cool, Vic!
