I have found that if you (your ancestry) are a member of a relatively stationary population for many generations in the 16th - 19th century, you are related to pretty much anyone else who is in the same population. PGMers, Aroostook long timers are ones I am familiar with (For example: I am 4th cousin to Senator Susan Collins on one side, and 7th cousin on the other; we are both Aroostook families - a relatively isolated county).
This is great, because we are, of course, descended from hundreds of ancestors which gives us access to a number of populations.
And, to prove the point, I just ran a relationship to Vic Watt - just because his comment was adjacent- and we are 9th cousins with removals.
