I wanted to share my portrait painting of John Burns (1793-1872) with the community. He is known as the "Old Hero of Gettysburg", when at age 69, picked up his rifle and went to fight with the Union Army during the battle. Wounded in the arm, leg, and chest, he crawled away from his rifle and buried his ammunition before the Confederates could overtake his position. As a non-uniformed combatant, he was subject to summary execution on the battlefield if caught, but he convinced the Confederate Army that he was a straggler caught up in the fight. They tended to his wounds and released him. After that he became a national celebrity for his heroic actions.
