PLEASE ANSWER THIS POST TO JOIN THE GERMANY PROJECT: If you have a question about German Genealogy, please create a new G2G post with your question (click on "Ask A Question" above) and add the tag "Germany". Thanks!

The Germany Project is seeking members to join us as we add and improve the profiles of our German ancestors (those that lived in the country we now know as the Federal Republic of Germany, formerly the German Confederation, Prussia, Holy Roman Empire, etc.).

The Germany Project covers all things German, including 16 regional teams, functional teams for translation and profile improvement, as well as historical, migrational and special-interest teams. If there’s not an existing team that covers your area of interest, just let us know and we can look into adding one. Take a look at our main PROJECT PAGE for links to our teams.

The Germany Project is a helpful community that encourages collaboration between people from all around the world. Along with sourcing, connecting and improving German profiles, our project is developing a German portal, which will make it much easier to collaborate with German-speaking members. The future of the Germany Project is bright with possibilities and it’s a very exciting time to join us.

Membership is open to all who have:

signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

Joining is easy … just post an ANSWER below (as opposed to a comment or reply - note that comments will be answered but then hidden). Please state:

that you'd like to join the project,
what your German-related interests are, and
what you want to contribute to the project.

Our only contribution requirements are: (1) you respond to twice yearly check-ins, and (2) you improve one German profile every 6 months.

The only thing you’ve got to lose is a brick-wall or two!

I would like to join. My Omas name was Berta Weiss (Alternate spelling: Weiß) she was born on November 22, 1932 in Lambsheim, Germany to Friedrich weiß and Elisabeth Weiß (Born Gimbel).

Berta's grandfather's name was Wilhelm, but I'm not sure if it was her grandfather on her mother's side or her dad's.

Berta's father, Friedrich was in the Wehrmacht, He got shot in the face and left for dead by a SS officer for disobeying orders, but survived.

Her mother, Elisabeth was a house wife.

They were protestant.

Their hometown was Frankenthal, the street they lived on ended at the entry gates, and across the street from a plant that Friedrich worked at.

Berta had her first child named Wolfgang Weiß, with Unknown person in Germany. Unknown was abusive to her, and she left him. Later on She met my grandfather, Francis Clifford Chenette (Born July 28, 1929 in New Hampshire) who was in the US Army and stationed in Germany, She waited tables in a restaurant and he couldn't read German so She translated the menu for him. They married in Germany first but the US didn't recognize their marriage from Germany so they remarried in the US. They got married on a military base.

Berta and Francis had 2 children together named Michael Steven Chenette born on September 14th, 1961 in Montgomery AL, and Frank Charles Chenette born on February 6, 1967 in Saint Louis, Minnesota.

Friedrich and Elisabeth only visited the states one time to visit berta and her family in Florida around 1976 or 1977.

Friedrich died around 1977 or 1978 from a stroke.

After Friedrich died, Elizabeth went to live with bertas family for a couple of years, but missed Germany so she moved back and died around 1983.

Francis chenette died in 2015, and Berta died in 2018.

Hi Traci,

I have a bit of German ancestry on both sides of the family. I have already added a couple of great grandparents to my tree and Jelena has been a fabulous help with translation. Some of these ancestors lived near the French border during the Napoleonic years so some of the information for these German ancestors were in French.

I would like to join! My 3x great grandmother was born in Germany in 1868, married in London, England in 1886 and immigrated to the United States in 1904. I know nothing of her parents, her obit only stated that she was born near Berlin, Germany!

Hi, my father's side is German, at least that is what I thought till I had my DNA tested. Still very German, but with trails to other places and a mystery great great grandfather, with possible tall story of being a burger in Strasburg and unable to marry my 2x great grandmother because of the Nepoleonic wars. I studied German at school, though very badly, I have enough to work my around it to some extent. Looking forward to hearing from you...Cheers Marguerite

Good Morning, I'd love to join. My mom was born in Bad Neustadt, Germany. She left in her early 20's for Canada and never went back. Her dad was not in the picture. My German Grandma/Omi was very young when her mom died and knew none of her ancestors, she was raised by her step dad that then remarried. She had an older sister that left the step home and mysteriously disappeared. When Omi's biological dad died in the 40's she found out who he was and that she was the first heir to his estate (meaning her sister was deceased). My 3rd great grandad on my father's side was also German. I identify as German since I was raised with a lot of the traditions. It will beinteresting to see what this group will find!

I have reached a brick wall with my German, Great grandfather, Frederick Papke. Born in Prussia 1835 died in Stuart NE 1896, came to America in 1April 1869 on the Bark Jenny, lived in Buffalo with first wife Augustine 1868-1877, Married second wife Minnie Wolff In Buffalo then on to NE homestead in 1888.

I would like to join the Germany project. I have ancestors from Germany on both sides of my family tree. Catherine Zone and Johann Christian Diehl are both from there. Additionally, i have a current dead end on my G5grandfather Philip Hines. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1780-81 but can't find anymore about his parents.

I have two Prussian brick walls that show up in New Mexico in the mid 1800s and that's as far back as I have gone with them. I would love to trace them back to Europe. Every time I start to look into it, I get overwhelmed and tiptoe back out. I would love to join.

I have been on wikitree for a couple years and have found it fun, interesting and helpful. Both sides of my parentages have German roots and my Father we have gotten back to 1500’s ! But stuck on my mother’s grandfather...Brennecka with many varied spellings. Still searching... Brennecke, Breneka, Brenika, Branika, etc etc etc...

My wife's Great Grandfather and his brother were immigrants from Germany. It appears they came by ship in 1885. (Census says they were naturalized in late 1885) No parents or other siblings can be found and they were to young to remember much and later tell their children. They were taken to the Five Points House of Industry and later to the Children's Aid Society in NYC. This I have confirmed. From there they were placed on an Orphan Train and both got off in Marshfield, Webster Co., MO. The brother, William, was adopted by the Bollinger family while Fred Francis was bounced from farm to farm. He later settled in Webster County, MO, married a local woman (McCormack) and raised a large family. Many are still located in the Webster County area.

The surname they have today is Keeler but the surname they came over with was more likely Kohler or Kahler. I have done quite a bit of research and think I know many answers but can't prove my hypothesis. I am looking for more and better information to help me link the family to their German roots.

Hi My G Grandfather on my mothers side came from Germany. His name was Jurgen Julius Dillen (i think its spelt different in German). He was born abt 1846, possibly in Zandvliet?

My Grt. Grandfather came over from Germany in 1848. He was born to Henry Krebs & Louisa Spear Krebs Jan. 28. 1820 at Wernigrode, Prussia. Henry & Louisa are buried near Wernigerode. I would like to know if there were more children of them and if any came to America AND would like to go back more generations. Thank you for any help on this.

Hi Traci, I would like to join the Germany Project. I have German ancestors, but really don't know who they are. My DNA test all point to German ancestry" AncestryDNA - 26% Germanic Europe; Family Tree DNA - 20% Central Europe (including Germany), and 23&Me reports 42.6% French/German. 23&Me shows highly likely matches in these areas:

My Y-DNA test at FTDNA shows I match Aker not my surname Hale. Checking with my Aker match he said his ancestors were from Spabach, Alsace (near Altkirch in the Haut Alsace region). I would appreciate any help in discovering who my common Aker ancestor is.
