PLEASE ANSWER THIS POST TO JOIN THE GERMANY PROJECT: If you have a question about German Genealogy, please create a new G2G post with your question (click on "Ask A Question" above) and add the tag "Germany". Thanks!

The Germany Project is seeking members to join us as we add and improve the profiles of our German ancestors (those that lived in the country we now know as the Federal Republic of Germany, formerly the German Confederation, Prussia, Holy Roman Empire, etc.).

The Germany Project covers all things German, including 16 regional teams, functional teams for translation and profile improvement, as well as historical, migrational and special-interest teams. If there’s not an existing team that covers your area of interest, just let us know and we can look into adding one. Take a look at our main PROJECT PAGE for links to our teams.

The Germany Project is a helpful community that encourages collaboration between people from all around the world. Along with sourcing, connecting and improving German profiles, our project is developing a German portal, which will make it much easier to collaborate with German-speaking members. The future of the Germany Project is bright with possibilities and it’s a very exciting time to join us.

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

Joining is easy … just post an ANSWER below (as opposed to a comment or reply - note that comments will be answered but then hidden).  Please state:

  • that you'd like to join the project,
  • what your German-related interests are, and
  • what you want to contribute to the project.

Our only contribution requirements are: (1) you respond to twice yearly check-ins, and (2) you improve one German profile every 6 months.

The only thing you’ve got to lose is a brick-wall or two!

P.S. You don't have to join the project to add the German Roots sticker to your profile ... simply copy the following and add it to your profile:

{{German Roots Sticker}}

edited 1/26/21 to update membership requirements, 2/11 added sticker info, 9/27 added contrib requirements

I would like to join. My Omas name was Berta Weiss (Alternate spelling: Weiß) she was born on November 22, 1932 in Lambsheim, Germany to Friedrich weiß and Elisabeth Weiß (Born Gimbel).

Berta's grandfather's name was Wilhelm, but I'm not sure if it was her grandfather on her mother's side or her dad's.

Berta's father, Friedrich was in the Wehrmacht, He got shot in the face and left for dead by a SS officer for disobeying orders, but survived.

Her mother, Elisabeth was a house wife.

They were protestant.

Their hometown was Frankenthal, the street they lived on ended at the entry gates, and across the street from a plant that Friedrich worked at.

Berta had her first child named Wolfgang Weiß, with Unknown person in Germany. Unknown was abusive to her, and she left him. Later on She met my grandfather, Francis Clifford Chenette (Born July 28, 1929 in New Hampshire) who was in the US Army and stationed in Germany, She waited tables in a restaurant and he couldn't read German so She translated the menu for him. They married in Germany first but the US didn't recognize their marriage from Germany so they remarried in the US. They got married on a military base.

l

Berta and Francis had 2 children together named Michael Steven Chenette born on September 14th, 1961 in Montgomery AL, and Frank Charles Chenette born on February 6, 1967 in Saint Louis, Minnesota.

Friedrich and Elisabeth only visited the states one time to visit berta and her family in Florida around 1976 or 1977.

Friedrich died around 1977 or 1978 from a stroke.

After Friedrich died, Elizabeth went to live with bertas family for a couple of years, but missed Germany so she moved back and died around 1983.

Francis chenette died in 2015, and Berta died in 2018.

I have German roots on both sides of my tree. My mother was German, born in Biebrich, Wiesbaden, Hesse in 1936. I have recently discovered that I am likely German on my biofather's side via the Palatine German migration. This is currently my area of interest and research - trying to definitively connect my male side lineage to their European/German origins.

Hello,  I was born in Regensburg.  My mom's side was all born in Desden & Area, and then in the 40's moved to Regensburg.  My dad is born in Bulgaria, and moved to Germany in the 40's also.

I have been sporadically (and rather unsuccessfully) working to research my family origins. Originally from the Stettin (Grambow?) area of Prussia; which is now part of Poland...

Hi Scott. Welcome to the Germany Project! I left a comment with instructions on your profile page.

I added you as a Germany project member, but you might also want to check out the Poland Project. We will eventually be re-starting our Prussia Team, hopefully in the near future. Stay tuned!

Thank you!

Yes, I would like to join the Germany Project. My Hess 2nd great-grandparents came from Germany and landed in Baltimore in 1833. I have quite a bit of their history on WikiTree. When my son was in the Army back in the 1980s, he and his german wife went around to different cities that the family was from and gathered information. They were primarily from Baden-Wüertemberg, Germany.

Hello Traci,

According to my father and his father, my paternal great-grandfather (Henry Harris) was from Hamburg, Germany and married an Annie Walsh from Ireland - but that's all I/we know.  Not sure how much I could contribute to this project, but would be interested if it might also help me discover more about that part of my family.

Thank you.

Hi Maureen. If you decide to become a full member of WikiTree (sign the Honor Code), I can add you as a project member. In the meantime, check out our Project page and our Hamburg Team page, which has resources you can use to find records in Hamburg.

Both of my parents' lines originated in Germany or came through Germany on their way to the US.   My mother's paternal line, Landis, was part of the Anabaptist movement in Zurich, (we think including the martyr Hans Landis) then moving into Germany.  My father's line Bittinger/Bittner/Bitner/Buetner has many family members from the Baden-Württemberg area.  It was believed that they, too, were Anabaptists, but there are records of baptsims in the state churches in Germany.  They entered through Philadelphia, the Bitners  on the Bilander Vernon, and many settled eventually in the Western Maryland & WV areas.

I might be able to help with the Lower Saxony area of Germany.  Our family's oldest farm is located in Lechtingen-Wallenhorst, Lower Saxony, Germany and is still in the family.  I also have a couple of history type books from the area.

I have German ancestry on both sides, I am about 5 percent German, the rest being Dutch and NZ.

I actually do have a couple of brick walls, so this sounds quite intriguing!

My earliest paternal ancestor may also have been German, so I am hoping to find some leads!

I have German ancestors ,mostly on my great-great-grandparents side. One branch (Lindner) came to South Australia from the Harz mountains(1851 ship Herder) ,& the Huckel family from Prussia/Silesia in  1849 (ship Pauline). I would like to find out more about their German origins. My autosomal DNA results show up to 8% Germanic Europe, & several matches from both branches.

I would like to join the Germany project .

Gruss Gott!

Many roots of my family stem from all reaches of Germany.  And, our roots cross and bond with the roots of others.  I have particular interest in the contributions of German musicians, especially Organists and Cantors.

Tschuss!

I'd like to join the Germany project. Lots of German ancestors & one in particular that I've hit a brick wall on is [[Breuninger-14|Heinrich  Breuninger (abt.1760-)]]. I love making connections between existing parts of the tree.

I wish to join the Germany Project. My father was adopted as a baby in New Zealand. His biological father was Reginald Charles Schaare whose father was Otto Schaare. Otto was the son of Jacob Schaare and Sophie Dorothea Caroline Ida Heitefusz. I can get no further at this stage and look forward to extending this heritage. I am willing to help others with any source of information I may come across.
