PLEASE ANSWER THIS POST TO JOIN THE GERMANY PROJECT: If you have a question about German Genealogy, please create a new G2G post with your question (click on "Ask A Question" above) and add the tag "Germany". Thanks!

The Germany Project is seeking members to join us as we add and improve the profiles of our German ancestors (those that lived in the country we now know as the Federal Republic of Germany, formerly the German Confederation, Prussia, Holy Roman Empire, etc.).

The Germany Project covers all things German, including 16 regional teams, functional teams for translation and profile improvement, as well as historical, migrational and special-interest teams. If there’s not an existing team that covers your area of interest, just let us know and we can look into adding one. Take a look at our main PROJECT PAGE for links to our teams.

The Germany Project is a helpful community that encourages collaboration between people from all around the world. Along with sourcing, connecting and improving German profiles, our project is developing a German portal, which will make it much easier to collaborate with German-speaking members. The future of the Germany Project is bright with possibilities and it’s a very exciting time to join us.

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

Joining is easy … just post an ANSWER below (as opposed to a comment or reply - note that comments will be answered but then hidden).  Please state:

  • that you'd like to join the project,
  • what your German-related interests are, and
  • what you want to contribute to the project.

Our only contribution requirements are: (1) you respond to twice yearly check-ins, and (2) you improve one German profile every 6 months.

The only thing you’ve got to lose is a brick-wall or two!

P.S. You don't have to join the project to add the German Roots sticker to your profile ... simply copy the following and add it to your profile:

{{German Roots Sticker}}

I would like to join. My Omas name was Berta Weiss (Alternate spelling: Weiß) she was born on November 22, 1932 in Lambsheim, Germany to Friedrich weiß and Elisabeth Weiß (Born Gimbel).

Berta's grandfather's name was Wilhelm, but I'm not sure if it was her grandfather on her mother's side or her dad's.

Berta's father, Friedrich was in the Wehrmacht, He got shot in the face and left for dead by a SS officer for disobeying orders, but survived.

Her mother, Elisabeth was a house wife.

They were protestant.

Their hometown was Frankenthal, the street they lived on ended at the entry gates, and across the street from a plant that Friedrich worked at.

Berta had her first child named Wolfgang Weiß, with Unknown person in Germany. Unknown was abusive to her, and she left him. Later on She met my grandfather, Francis Clifford Chenette (Born July 28, 1929 in New Hampshire) who was in the US Army and stationed in Germany, She waited tables in a restaurant and he couldn't read German so She translated the menu for him. They married in Germany first but the US didn't recognize their marriage from Germany so they remarried in the US. They got married on a military base.

l

Berta and Francis had 2 children together named Michael Steven Chenette born on September 14th, 1961 in Montgomery AL, and Frank Charles Chenette born on February 6, 1967 in Saint Louis, Minnesota.

Friedrich and Elisabeth only visited the states one time to visit berta and her family in Florida around 1976 or 1977.

Friedrich died around 1977 or 1978 from a stroke.

After Friedrich died, Elizabeth went to live with bertas family for a couple of years, but missed Germany so she moved back and died around 1983.

Francis chenette died in 2015, and Berta died in 2018.

I would like to join the German Project. My maternal ancestors came from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's northernmost state.

Surnames include:
Boysen (Almdorf); Brodersen (Ellerbuell); Carstensen (Bredstedt); Hargens (Heide); Ingwersen (Hattstedt); Petersen (Hattstedt); Sander ( Dellstedt)

I have struggled with translating documents, names, and naming patterns.

My grandfather, Johann Carstensen immigrated to America in 1901 when he was 15 years old with his brother Paul who was 18 at the time. They went to live with their uncle Christian August Ingwersen in Chicago. Many family members came by way of chain migration.

Hello!

I am answering this post as a request to join the Germany Project. My Ancestry DNA results show that I am 48% Germanic with emphasis on Central and Northern Germany. I know part of this includes Switzerland, as my paternal Grandmother's father immigrated to the USA from Switzerland in 1911/1912. I have a few questions I would like to ask regarding other members of my German immigrant family, and have added their profiles. Thanks!

Hello Traci. I would like to join the project as I have family and records from areas around Niedersachsen and Hesse. I, like everyone else, would like to work on this one tree to improve the genealogical record and avoid duplication. I have transcribed some records from Matricula and have others that were transcribed for me that I would like to add. I look forward to working with everyone

My family immigrated from Insel Föhr in the1870s. I have extensive data from that branch. I am specifically interested in the Schleswig Holstein/Föhr pages. I have not uploaded trees onto the Wiki but could...most of my info is on ancestry.com.

I'm very interested in joining this project as my family appeared to be 99% German until recently when I discovered we were alot English also. I do know both sides of my family come from all over Germany.  Will Silesia be covered in the project?  Family there is one of my largest brick walls.  Janice Wall-Buker

I would like to find some information about my great grandfather and his family who came from Prussia.
by Dianne Garner G2G1 (1.5k points)

Hi Dianne, I sent you an email about joining the project.

Hi Dianne, I'm interested in 19th century migration to Australia from Prussia. I looked at your family tree, and noticed you have a great Grandmother born at Pilow, which is now the small settlement of Pilów, 120 East of Szczecin in Poland.

Thank you for your response.  I was unsure about the spelling as it was spelt differently on several documents.  I found it very difficult to track down which Carl Riek was my great grandfather.  It appeared to be a very common name and there were several possibilities.  I was lucky enough to find an obituary which gave me sufficient details to identify him.  There are several publications re German migration.  Let me know if I can help you in any way.  Regards Dianne

I'd like to join the Germany Project.  My great Grandfather Peter Thomsen and great grandmother Catherine Jurgensen immigrated from the Schleswig Holstein area in 1888.  I found their immigration record showing date of arrival in New York as 25 Jun 1888 along with their son Thomas.  They were going to Omaha, Ne so I believe they had friends or relatives there.but I've been unable to determine who they are.

Hi Traci,

My paternal grandfather (Georg Otto) was born in Brandenburg an der Havel and very young immigrated to Brazil alone. He went to live in São João da Boa Vista in the state of São Paulo. He was an influential person in the city and married Catharina Kühl, became a widower and later married Ida Agnes Schmeiske born in Peitz Cottobus. My father Emílio was born from this last one. From my grandfather I have now obtained information about his hometown, since my grandmother Ida, I have many family members arriving in the 1700s. For this reason I would like to participate in this project to add my family and discover new relatives.

Hi Traci,

I have German roots on both sides of my family, and my surname, Pagels, is a German surname that was anglicized from Pagel when immigrants left Germany for America. I also have surnames in my family of Kroll, Moeller, and Deutsch, all of German Origin. Would love to help out!

Hello Traci, I have a few ancestral lines that trace to Germany: Geist, Wagner, and Koch.  I am seeking input on how to continue my research in Europe. I am not very in-depth on International research, but I can help with Ohio and some other states if members need it.

Thank you, Jerry Geist

Hi, I would like to join the Germany project, to find more about my ancestors in Germany. My paternal grandfather was born near Kassel, immigrated in 1914, and met my grandmother here in NY state. Her family were immigrants from the Mecklenburg area in the 1860’s I believe. I want to find out more.

Thank you

Bob Schafer.
