I have had a stem cell transplant and would like to be tested for ancestral DNA.

Will the test be valid now I have a hybrid blood system?

It would depend on the type of tissue being transplanted and the type of tissue being DNA tested. If an individual had a bone marrow transplant, they would not want to use blood as a source of DNA because it would either be chimeric (contain both donor and recipient cells), if they did not undergo full-body irradiation, or contain primarily donor cells, if they did undergo full-body irradiation before the transplant. The cheek cells typically used for genealogy testing would not be affected in the recipient as long as the sample was collected carefully to avoid drawing any blood.

Great question, what do your doctors say?

I'm not sure if this link will explain anything:

Hello Skeeter,

I think it would depend on what type of stem cell transplant you underwent with regard to any changes it may have made. If it was stem cells from your own body then it would make no difference

Stem cell transplants can use cells from your own body (autologous stem cell transplant), from a donor (allogeneic stem cell transplant) or from an identical twin (syngeneic transplant).

All the best
