David William Pettis was born July 23, 1808 in Argyle, Washington County, New York. David’s father died when he was 13 years of age and at the age of 17 he was apprenticed to a shoemaker with whom he remained until he was within six years of his majority, when he bought his freedom, and branched out in life for himself. He married Sarah Ann (Ellis) Pettis (1812 - 1880) abt. 1829 in Lyons, New York. The family moved to Wisconsin then pushing westward to Winona, Minnesota. David passed away February 24, 1881 in Winona County, Minnesota.

We need help collaborating in obtaining more sources. Any help is appreciated.

Also what was age of majority that is mentioned? He bought his freedom was he an indentured servant?

I would like more sources and info about his father William Matthew Pettis (1770 - 1821) and his mother Ruth Crandall (1771 - 1837)
