Help us find and improve next week's Connection Finder profiles: Country-Western Music Stars

Next week's Example Profile in the Connection Finder will be Charley Pride, famed country music musician and baseball player, who passed away at the end of 2020.

We're looking for profiles of other country-western stars to feature alongside him. Here are a few of the people we're getting started on:

Can you help with these profiles, or expand their families? Adding relatives in any direction helps with connections. Every missing relative you add will make our connections to them closer.

Who else should we feature? Do they need a profile?

All profiles we feature need a good biography and a connection to the big tree. We also want each one to have an image, and the image needs to have proper source attribution explaining why it's in the public domain or why we have the right to display it.

We can't feature everyone mentioned (we only have room for eight per week), but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

To help us plan future themes, see the 2021 Example Profile Plans post here.

Great list, Christine, I love it, but you've gotta add Jim Reeves and Marty Robbins to the pecking order!

AH Dennis yes!! Absolutely, can't believe I forgot about Marty Robbins!

Keith Whitley

Trying to find women, too...

Tammy Wynette

Dottie West

Oh yes, Keith Whitley, I remember when he passed away. So sad.

I thought about Tammy Wynette but I didn't realize she had passed!!

Tagging on to the American list -- John Denver

As far as women, don't forget Kitty Wells. Her profile and connections need your help!

Found Johnny Horton's profile - not connected yet

I connected Johnny's profile through his mother's side today.

Reg Lindsay. Has pic, has bio, is connected.

by Melanie Paul G2G6 Pilot (422k points)

Also Slim Dusty.  Has pic, has bio, is connected.

I am sorry to say one of our greats (Ruby Hunter) does not appear to have a profile, and because she was First Nations Australian, I doubt we could work up a profile in a week.

Well, we might just get Ruby Connected, as she now has a profile (thanks, Leandra).  Her bio is currently a work in progress.

Edited to add link to Ruby's profile.

Thanks for identifying some Australian country music greats, Melanie. smiley

After I visited Australia, I commented that [in many respects] Australians were like Americans, only more so, and I believe that Australian country music is one manifestation of that. cheeky

My favourites are (fortunately) still living, so I can't nominate them.

But I hope, even if they're not chosen, someone will gain something from just checking these three out.  (Ruby was one of the Stolen Generations, so had a story to tell.)
Thanks for recommending Reg and Slim, Melanie. Great Aussies who carved out our modern country music industry.

There's also Jimmy Little AO (no profile that I could find), Smoky Dawson (also could not find a profile), and Gurrumul - may be more "folk" than Country, although he sang of his Country; older brother of the lead singer of Yothu Yindi (also could not find a profile).

I've just created and built a profile for Smoky Dawson, Melanie.  His connection will show tomorrow.  I've also created a profile for Tex Morton (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brown-118849), but I don't think he's up there with Slim and Smoky (just my opinion).
Thanks everyone for putting in suggestions for Australia. Some excellent profiles, including the legendary Slim.

Special thanks Leandra and Melanie for suggesting and getting the profile done for Ruby Hunter. That's wonderful.

Ruby Hunter's profile is complete and connected.

For country music legend Roger Miller, I proposed a merge a year ago between https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Miller-63326 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Miller-34011 The latter profile is yellow privacy level and needs to be unlocked so the merge can proceed.
by Margaret Summitt G2G6 Pilot (320k points)
Also Roger Miller's uncle, Shelby "Sheb" Wooley https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wooley-757 of "Hee-Haw" fame and creator of the "Purple People Eater."

Here are a few other possibilities:

Jimmy Dean has an extensive profile and is connected

Kitty Wells  isn't connected and needs quite a bit of work

Lynn Anderson is connected

Jimmy Rodgers nice biography and is connected

I was also going to suggest K. T. Oslin but her profile is private.

Kitty Wells is now connected and should show up tomorrow as such. :-) She is connected through her direct line to her second ggrandfather, David Brown Street.

Another (Slim Dusty and Reg Lindsay have already been recommended) great Aussie country icon to consider is Smoky Dawson (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brown-118849).  On top of everything else that makes him famous, at the time of his death he was the world's oldest recording artist.  His connection will display tomorrow.
by Kenneth Evans G2G6 Pilot (247k points)
Nice profile Ken. Thanks for that. I used to go horse-riding at Smoky Dawson's ranch when I was a child :)

It's a shame Harry Dean Stanton (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stanton-3218) never recorded an album.  He was a great country singer as well as actor.

Add Loretta Lynn, Reba McIntire, Martina McBride, Jeannie Shepard, Bobbie Gentry, Linda Ronstadt, Shania Twain, Crystal Gayle, Lynn Anderson, Barbara Mandrell, Patty Loveless, Emmylou Harris, Pam Tillis, Tanya Tucker, Connie Smith, Kitty Wells.
by Gail Hardy G2G6 (7.0k points)
They would need to be deceased artists Gail.  Profiles of living people would be unlisted.

I have just added three sources and added a mother for Kitty Wells. There are more sources available and I am happy to come back and do those later today. I noticed that she is not connected so am trying to add enough to do that.

Here is a compiled list I created of all known Wikipedia entries of Country Music stars with known WikiTree IDs - Wikidata for Country Music Stars with WikiTree IDs

by John Schalcosky G2G6 Mach 1 (10.2k points)

Thanks John, that's interesting. I was quite certain there could be nothing French in this list, but there is Paul Barrere, with French-born paternal grandparents and some good work done on his French ancestry, and, amusingly, the absurdly famous and popular in France (unknown everywhere else) Johnny Hallyday - who could definitely use more work on his ancestors. (Note that in France he's known as a rock star, and not Country-Western, though he did touch many genres including Country).

To add to the already great names listed... I would suggest "Tennessee Ernie" FordRoy ClarkWaylon Jennings and Merle Haggard!

How about a Canadian - Don Messer (Messer-10) already connected. Anyone who grew up in Canada in the 60's would remember "Don Messer's Jubilee" on CBC.

Couple that come to mind don't think have been mentioned yet Buck Owens and another female to suggest, Jean Shepard.

"Buck" has a nice profile and looking like connected.

Edit: I see he was already listed above too, great minds and all. yes

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shepard-2829

"Jeannie" has a profile that needs adopted and some work and only has her parents, so not connected yet obviously.

Info at..

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Shepard
Jean now has a profile picture, and a basic biography that removed the bullet point "fact, fact" that was there.

I have doubts she could be connected in the next couple of days, but I guess it'd be possible if someone better versed in US research were to work on it.
Looks nice Melanie, I would like to contribute but I sadly have several days of travel in my week no Wiki fun :(
In between working on looking for sources for the Challenge, I also looked for possible connections for Jean -- and failed to find anyone already on WT.  Because I didn't have the time to create potentially dozens of profiles, in an attempt to find a Connection to an existing profile, I have left the Connecting until another time.

If anyone else wants to try, go right ahead.
