This John Godfrey, born 31 Jan 1703 in Newport County, RI to John and Elizabeth (Carr) Godfrey is not the same individual born to Robert and Hannah (Hackett) Godfrey. Robert and Hannah lived in Massachusetts. Both men had sons named John. They are two different individuals.

Robert and Hannah (Hackett) Godfrey lived their entire lives in Massachusetts.

John and Elizabeth (Carr) Godfrey lived their entire lives in Rhode Island.

How can the children born in Rhode Island be considered the children of the Massachusetts couple?

The assertion made in the article from RI Roots, Vol. 13, pgs 34-35 regarding parentage is flawed and incorrect and in direct conflict with the RI Vital Records as well as The Carr Family Genealogies.

Are you able to access NEHGR 163:73? This gives the John Godfrey married to 1/ Katherine Davis and 2/ Susannah Beare as the son of Robert and Hannah (Hackett) Godfrey. Gives no probable date of birth and lists death as after 8 Dec 1760. This is the most recent research I found and was published 2009. Extensively documented and footnoted.

It seems Robert Godfrey did end up in Rhode Island, his estate administration is there recorded. The property records are a muddle but detailed at NEHGR 163:72 (subscription).

Edit: NEHGR does cite, in part, the Rhode Island Roots article but I don't believe for the property records. Can you show why this is in error as this would also show the NEHGR research to be in error. To which Carr genealogy do you refer? 1894 by Edson Carr page 31? That genealogy gives no documentation for the familial relationships and so would need to be supported by primary source documentation.

The profiles of Godfrey-1874 and Godfrey-3575 have again been corrected to reflect their correct parents and spouses, with sources added. The only issue on these profiles is the similar date of birth. There is a birth record for Godfrey-3575 a birth record for Godfrey-1874 has not been found.
