Would you like to join the U.S. Southern Colonies Project? [closed]

Do you have early ancestors from Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, and/or Georgia, or are you interested in working on pre-1776 profiles from these colonies?  If so, come join the US Southern Colonies Project. There are plenty of ways to get involved, whether it be through a colonial, topical, or profile improvement team.

If you have an interest in U.S. Southern Colonial history, have been on WikiTree at least 30 days, have made at least 100 contributions, and have successfully taken the pre-1700 quiz, then we would love to have you join us.

To join the project, please click on the 'answer this post' link below and say that you would like to join (please don't use the 'comment' link as it makes it hard to keep track - thanks!) and list the team(s) that you want to join.  Make sure that you are logged onto Wikitree when you answer so we know who you are.  A project member will be in touch to get your email address (for the Google group discussion) and confirm your team interests.

Sincerely,

Your U.S. Southern Colonies Leaders (Darlene and Scott)

If you respond that you want to join, be sure to review the teams and list the team(s) that you want to join with your answer.  Thank you.

I would like to join the Southern Colonies group. My maiden name is Charlee Whiddon. Thank you!
Hi Charlee,

The minimum contributions to join Southern Colonies Project is 100 contributions.  You have 30 contributions.  Plus you also need to pass the Pre-1700 self certification.

Please reapply to us when you have achieved the contributions and the Pre-1700 certification.
Hi! I believe I've completed all the requirements to join.
Hi  Charles,

Watch  a private message coming your way, with what you need to do next.   Thanks.
Is this a Duplicate group if we belong to the Virginia group?

This confuses me….all the groups etc. Point me in the direction of a concise explanation of what group we should belong to.  Thanks in advance. Lynn
Hi, Lynn.  Virginia Colony in the Southern Colonies Project focuses on pre-1776 Virginia while Virginia in the United States project focuses on the post-1776 period.  Same for Province of Maryland in the Southern Colonies Project (pre-1776) and Maryland State (post-1776).
Lynn - the best list I know of is at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Project_Accounts
Hi  Lynn, you have the United States badge.  This covers Virginia subproject AFTER it became a state.

The thread you have asked this question is for US Southern Colonies which covers colonies and Provinces which began before 1776.

I will send you the information for US Southern Colonies.  Read it, then reply to my email address after you select the team you want to work with.

Thanks.

Hi! I'm interested in joining the Southern Colonies team, along with the Virginia and North Carolina teams. Thanks!!
by Jane Johnson G2G Crew (560 points)

Hi Jane, I see that you've just joined Wikitree.  One of the requirements to join the project is to be a Wikitree member for 30 days.  Please get back in touch with me in late February and we'll be happy to welcome you to the project.   Thanks for your interest!

ut-oh. I goofed. I'm filling in for Darlene & was waiting for Sherry to hit 100 contributions. Just saw that you were at 103 and got my wires crossed. Please tuck away my private message till you pass the 30-day requirement. My apologies for the confusion (and for removing your Southern Colonies badge so soon after awarding it!).

Cheers, Liz

by Sherry Duty G2G Crew (560 points)
Sherry - you are SO close! You just have 9 contributions to go before meeting the project's requirements to join. Look for an e-mail from me about the next steps once you hit that magic "100 contributions" :D

Cheers, Liz

Yes, I  would like to join this project as almost all of my ancestors were from the South.
by David Hall G2G Crew (560 points)
Hi David, the project requires a minimum of 100 contributions to Wikitree to be a member.  I see that you haven't connected yourself into the Wikitree yet.  Add your parents and grandparents and great-grandparents (being sure to add at least one source to each profile) until you come across a profile that already exists for one of your ancestors.  Then you're 'connected' into the Wikitree, and while doing this you will learn how to help with Wikitree.  Once you've accomplished that, let us know.  Have fun!

Hi Allison, what team(s) would you like to join?  I see you've requested to join the Google group, so I've got your email address.  Let me know the teams and I can award you the badge and add you.  Thanks.

I've awarded you the project badge and added you to Team Virginia and the Google group.  Let me know if you want to be on any of the other teams.

Thank you so much! Is there a list of teams? I am interested in the tidewater Virginia area, as well as particular surnames.

There's a link to the team page in my original post.  Here's another link.  We don't have teams by surnames, but you might consider starting a One-Name Study.  I started one for my Kirkland line, and have a category within that for Southern Colonies Kirklands . . .

I am interested in the US Southern Colonies Project, especially the Jamestown Colony project as I recently learned that I had many ancestors there.  Some were mentioned specifically as having survived the massacre.  Thank you.

I would like to join the Southern Colonies Project please.
by Jimmy Thomason G2G Crew (590 points)

Hi Jimmy, you first need to get pre-1700 certified.  The quiz is here.  Let me know once you've done that, and we'll move forward with getting you added.  You'll need to review the teams and let me know which one(s) you'd like to join.

I would like to be part of your work. I have recently been trying to sort out Alexander Younger and his descendants, but in my usual fashion didn't look for a project until now. I don't know which team(s) would be appropriate, as I have found myself doing sourcing and arborist work on this family, which begins in Virginia but extends into North Carolina, so put me on whichever team seems right. Thanks!

Yes, I would like to join and my interest is Colonial Virginia. I am a descendent of Lawrence Washington who immigrated from England with his brother John Washington, grandfather several times removed of George Washington.
by Jackie Younge G2G6 (6.9k points)
Hi Jackie, you've got to have a minimum of 100 contributions and be pre-1700 certified.  Once you meet those requirements, let me know and we'll be happy to have you join the project!
What counts as 100 contributions please?
When you edit and add to profiles, each one is a contribution.  You're at 92 right now, so almost there!

The earliest in my Sexton line (paternal - Southern pioneers) is found in 1760 SC, may have come from VA (or not), and is a brick wall.  My Peace and Mask lines go back to a plantation in NC.  I'd like to contribute what I have and collaborate with others in piecing these lives with their time and neighbors to create a better vision of their lives.  My interest is VA, NC, SC groups.

I'll send you a message, to which you'll need to respond, and I will then badge you and add you to the Google group.

Thanks!  Hope my responding here (rather than via email) is what's being requested.  Looking forward to exchanging research here.

Hi Lynn, you need to respond to the email that I sent you.  That's the only way that we have your email address.  That's why we send it.  wink
