John Stewart abt.1700 Bailteapail (Balchapel) Borenich, Scotland [closed]

Question

Looking for ascendents or any further information on John Stewart  b. abt 1700. John lived in Bailteapail (Balchapel) Borenich, Scotland, and was married to Christian Stewart.  

The couple had at least 5 children that I have Old Parish Registers (OPR)  for from Blair Athol Parish.  

1) Alex'r  b. 4 Nov 1722 in Bailteapail (Balchapel) Borenich, Sctld

2) Katharine b. 9 July 1727 in Miltown of Foss, Perthshire, Sctld

3) James  bpt. 1 Feb 1728 in Bailteapail (Balchapel) Borenich, Sctld

4) Grizzle (Grissel)  b. 9 Dec 1728 in Boranish, Sctld

5) John  b. 29 May 1738 in Bailteapail (Balchapel) Borenich, Sctld

I have no further information on John or Christian.  The OPRs do not go back beyond 1700-ish.

Given that your John Stewart moved around within the Atholl estates that is the the starting point but Stewart and Robertson are the most common names there so that is  a challenge.

The National Records of Scotland are a useful source of old records but only a few of these are available on-line. The on-line catalogue can be searched.

Go to catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk to use the search engine.

Search for: John Stewart            tick Phrase

Dates from: 1680             Dates to: 1730    tick to clear undated records

Enter search.

This gives almost 600 Johns Stewart for that period. However chances are low that he is there.

A more positive route is that he may have been recorded as a tenant of the estate. Perhaps a list of early 18th centy tenants is held in the Blair Castle Archives. This would need the assistance of the archivist.

The Atholl Charters can be found on-line in the Calendar of  House of Lords Manuscripts Vol.vii. Pt.2 from p.704 onward. These are useful for land owners or wadsetters but unlikely for lesser tenants.

Also, Balchapel, Borenich, Miltown of Foss are all in Perthshire, so Perthshire may be a better tag to use.

Thanks David.  I'm new to WT, so still making lots of mistakes.  Ended up watching some YouTube videos to figure things out a bit more.
