Good afternoon,
My name is Bobb Craig, and I have been working on my Tree, on and off, for 40-45 years.
I have tested with a variety of DNA companies, including doing the Y-700 test, fining that only myself and one other Craig, share a very small branch of the DNA tree somewhere between the late 1500's and early 1600s in Ayrshire, Scotland. He can actually trace his paternal side to Perthshire and I can trace my to Aberdeenshire, but the DNA moves us both back further the the southwest in Scotland. So my Paternal side is fairly well back to the "beginning" of the Craig name.
However, my GGM on my paternal side is a completely different issue, and has become the bane of my genealogical research. I have her family Bible, and in her own hand, it indicates that she, Jane Greig, was born in Montrose, Scotland on November 2, 1850. Later in life, as is shown in the US Census, she then changes the date to November 2, 1845. I have NEVER is all of my research came across any documents which indicate her parents or siblings names. There are no records in Scotland that prove she was born in or around that date in Montrose, or anywhere else in Scotland for that matter. I have even asked a Scottish genealogist do some research, and her results were the same as mine. I have some clues and beliefs about her family, but again, no proof. My 2nd cousin and I have tried to get the last remaining direct maternal like to take a mtDNA test, telling her we would pay for it, and once we had the raw DNA information would remove everything related to her as well from the web, but she is "too busy". We both think there is more to it that that, but one can only ask. I was going to use it to see if I could find the DNA trail using DNA Painter, knowing with her raw DNA I would be able to find more folks with that DNA.
Also, I have photographs from her photo albums showing people in Scotland, and then in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, whom I assume to be related to either her or her husband William L. Craig, but none of them have any names on them. Last year, I found these same people in a photo later in their lives, on a New Zealand old photographer's website, taken in Dunedin, but the owner of the website didn't know who they were. I had an article posted in the local paper there showing this photograph, without success as well. They may be Greig's or Craig's or not even related, although that seems a bit odd for sending photos half way round the world back then.
On my maternal side, I can go back to when West Virginia was still a part of Virginia, but the Court House burned to the ground way back then, and I am stuck, this on one side and on the other, can go to Iowa buck into the early 1800's and maybe back to New York somewhat earlier, but I have stopped looking there, as my Great Grandmother has become an all consuming issue for me.
My GEDCOMpare did not bring anything to light either ... not that that is surprising either.
Thanks for any suggestions or knowledge you folks might have.
Respectfully,
Bobb
