First off, here's a helpful guide: matching and merging
Do you have another profile that is a duplicate of this profile? The first step is to compare both profiles (using 2 different tabs on your browser is how I do it) and make sure they are duplicates without conflicting information. Then you click on "initiate a merge" on the bottom left under "matches and merges." The profile from which you clicked will be "ID 1" and you will then enter the profile ID 2 that will be the final name and number combination (assuming it's the same spelling of the last name at birth, you want the lower number, ie the profile that was created first.) The manager of the other profile will need to approve the merge and either profile manager can complete it. Or you can have a conversation back and forth with the other profile manager if there is a lot of information that might conflict or you are unsure about whether it is a valid match. Best to send a note to the other profile manager explaining the situation as fully as you can, especially if this is your first merge.
Once the merge is proposed and approved, you still need to carefully check and reconcile data before completing the merge. And then you have to edit the biography section, usually to remove duplicate text. It's not really hard, but it's still best not to rush it and pay attention to each line of information. Oh, and I think merges that are proposed and you don't get an answer for within 30 days are automatically approved.
Hope this helps!
(one more thing - if you know whether his preferred name was "Clarence" or "Thomas" you should edit the preferred name to match... so it won't give "Anonymous" as his preferred name. If you don't know, just change it back to "Clarence" since that's his first name as far as you know.)
