Newbie guidance on 'source'

+4 votes
I am totally new to this and have no idea what I should put in the source field! For my father's record I simply ticked the 'Personal recollection' box. However I have his birth certificate so I know his DOB is correct. Should I state that I got it from his birth certificate. Also for his parents I have found the GRO index entries. Should I state that I have found them and give details? Should I upload a scan of dad's birth certificate as one of the pictures of him? Or is that bad practivc? (e.g. for identity theft?)

The best citation provides enough information that another person could locate the source for him or herself, i.e. exact date and place of birth or death/place where birth or death was registered, where that information is currently located.  You can certainly say it’s from a birth certificate in your possession, but better to say where that certificate came from such as  “birth record from Strafford County Public Records Office, Dover N.H., copy in possession of John Smith”
I have added some sources

For citing the GRO index you might like to have a look at How_to_use_the_GRO#Citing_the_GRO for examples of how to do it.

I frequently upload scans of birth, marriage and death certificates as long as there is nobody named on them who is still living (so for example I don't upload a scan if the person registering a death is still alive). However if you are concerned about privacy you could just say the information came from the certificate which is in your possession.
