This would require a super techy, per other comments. Thanks anyway, Mike

Yes, this doesn't work because we don't have that Common.js installed on WikiTree. In theory it could be installed on the server, and should work, but I can't say for sure. It would be worth looking into, though. That collapsible text would be really helpful on talk pages.

It's been almost six years since this was asked. Has any new consideration been given to the collapsible or mw-collapsible table styles?

I'd also find use for the collapsible list template used on other MediaWiki sites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Collapsible_list

I use source lists with subsources that make for unreadably long profiles, and I'd like to hide those subsources unless a reader takes interest in them.

Edit: Here's an example of a profile where I'd like to hide the bulleted subsources. The biography is six sentences, but the source list will end up being six pages long: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hall-36310

It seems likely to me that a pure-CSS solution (not requiring JS) may be possible in modern browsers. Here's a demonstration that might be adapted to serve this purpose: http://jsfiddle.net/94ukA/4535/
Hi J. I would recommend asking a new G2G question. Commenting on my answer only gets seen by me. And while I worked for WikiTree when I posted that answer, I don't now, and so I don't really have any answers for you. But if you post a new question you'll get more feedback.
Thanks for letting me know, Lianne. I'll do as you suggest and ask a new question tomorrow.
