Hi All. What would be the central purpose of this for you? I understand that it's more compact. Is that useful for printing, or just so you don't have to scroll, or what? This could be important for how we present it and explain it.

The WT ancestor tree display goes back about 125 years (5 generations). For those of us with ancestors going back many hundreds of years, navigation can become very difficult from current known tree back to a target ancestor. All that is really needed is name and birth-death dates, with links to open the profile page. You could call it 'Extended ancestor tree'. Not sure if you'd want to select or limit the number of generations shown, but some trees go back 50+ generations, which might take some processor resources to display.

Thanks, Bob. I think we could do nine generations for this, but it may be seven or eight. (For others: RootsWeb and some other sites are capable of displaying more because they're being generated from small, individual files, not large collaborative databases like ours.)

The more generations the better without overly taxing the system.  I assume there would be a small ancestor pedigree chart icon (which links to another branch of the tree in this new 'compact' format) to the right of each ancestor?  Descendant list icons would also be helpful.  I also assume these new compact trees will be live with a url which can be e-mailed to others or embeded in a Web page, etc.

I think the key is to minimize wasted space and still be readable.

The table format is certainly nicer than the text format.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your meaning, yes, the "table" version looks nicer, but it takes up much more space. To be honest, I don't see what value a table format widget would add over the already-existing WikiTree "family tree" format, whereas having an option to display the tree in text format, as in the OP's link, gets a lot more family members into the picture.

While I wouldn't want to lose the format we have now, I would like the option of a tree that goes back more generations. I'm interested in seeing potential connections between ancestral lines, also areas that need more work.

Chris, if we could do nine generations, that could be amazing!

I think Bob Fields' suggestion to call it an Extended Ancestor Tree is a good one.
