Did he marry?

There is this

Name: William Jameson
Father's Name: Henry Jameson
Spouse Name: Mary Jane Wheaton
Spouse's Father's Name: Nathaniel Wheaton
Marriage Date: 25 Nov 1868
Marriage Place: Adelaide
Registration Place: Adelaide, South Australia
Page Number: 416
Volume Number: 77

Source Information

Ancestry.com. Australia, Marriage Index, 1788-1950 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2010.

Yes, thankyou! That's my great grandfather. But I hit a brickwall going beyond that. Where was William Watson born? Was Henry (who may have died in Adelaide in his 30s) really his father? Newspaper report of William's 1928 funeral  related William was born in Sydney and his father was a ship's captain. That seems unlikely.

Hi Neil. Jameson is at least in part a Scottish surname. Supposing that the man you ask about was born in Scotland, there is only one possibility with that exact name whose birth or baptism was registered and for whom the record still survives. If you search at the Scotland's People site for William Watson Jameson, both in church and statutory records, there is exactly one result:

Scotland's People OPR (Old Parish Registers) - Births and baptisms. Surname: JAMESON. Forename: WILLIAM WATSON. Parents/ Other Details: JOHN JAMESON/CHRISTIAN WATSON MOUAT FR213 (FR213). Gender: M. Date: 24/04/1854. Parish Number: 008/. Ref: 20 87. Parish: Northmavine.

This was in 1854. Does that rule it out? (It's possible that he was born earlier, and not baptised until 1854.)

Northmavine is in Shetland. Note the mother's birthname Mouat.

For £1.50 you could obtain an image of this birth or baptism record from Scotland's People. Perhaps this would shed further light.

Thankyou!  Had found that WW. Jameson but sadly not the one I seek. Mine was probably born in Australia in 1847 to mother Sarah (Sara). His father's details are very hazy and, to date, untraceable.
