Anyone know of a William Nassau Holmes who immigrated to Australia/New Zealand/Tasmania from Ireland between 1880 and 1890.

He was married to a Maria Susan Ardagh(1844-1913) with 9 children but seemingly left with 8 children - leaving the youngest behind with his wife.

Any informaiton on immigration / travels etc would be most grateful as stuck on this for a long time.

Many thanks

William Nassau Holmes was my great great grandfather,He was born in Ireland and immigrated to Tasmania in 1867 retiring as Captain after serving in the British army as a Major and fighting in the Indian Mutiny,However his wife was Jane Donaldson, born 1838 and passing away in 1908.William passed away 1st.February 1919.He took up land at West Scottsdale naming his property Dilkoosha. He was never married to a Maria Ardagh. All his children came to Tasmania with he and his wife. The eldest also William Nassau Holmes was my great grandfather. The youngest George Holmes moved to Canada and became Canadian tennis champion playing in the Davis Cup against Australia in 1922.
Sorry I made a mistake in my last comment. William,Jane and their family moved to Tasmania in 1881 where they were reunited with their eldest son,my great grandfather, also W.N.Holmes.He had been sent to school in Ireland and on coming to Tasmania became a school teacher. His eldest son Osbert W.N.Holmes was my mother's father.
Hey George. Many thanks for your reply. Based on the information and new information - you are my 6th cousin.

Where are you based etc ?

Contact me please.

Thank you again.
Thanks for your reply.I am based in Lismore NSW.What is your name and where do you live? I am very curious about the Maria Ardagh lady as William Nassau Holmes was married to Jane Donaldson.Their eldest son,my great grandfather, also W.N.Holmes was born in 1860.William and Jane and all their children moved to Tasmania after his retirement from the British army in 1881,

I look forward to hearing from you.
Hi George,

My name is Niall Ryan. My mother’s maiden name is Holmes originally from Monasterevin, Co. Kildare in Ireland.

We currently live in Cóbh historically known as Queenstown, Co Cork, Ireland.

I already had you on my family tree.

It’s great to finally be in contact.

I am in contact with several Holmes connections in Tasmania and Germany and UK.

Regards

Niall
Hi Niall I have just seen on facebook that you are friends with Richard and Barry Holmes.Their father Frank actually Francis Donaldson Holmes was my grandfather's first cousin but he was 18 years younger than Osbert and only 14 years older than my mother Margaret who was born in 1922.Still unsure how Maria Ardagh would be connected to our family unless she married a William Holmes who was not my great great grandfather and he may possibly have migrated to Australia or New Zealand. Our W.N.Holmes and Jane only had 5 children,William Nassau,Harold,Henry,Richard and George,I would also be interested to know the connection between your mother's family and mine going back to my great great grandfather.

Niall - I would suggest adding his profile to your question (Holmes-?) and adding his profile to the category for Brick Walls - Category:Family_Brickwall. Leaving no stone unturned!

Hi PM Eyestone,

As I don't use this often enough - so still very very new to this - how do I go about this?

I imported my GEDCOM and that is as far as i got and there are more than 2,500 names in the tree at that tiem and now currently nearing 3,200.

Basically I am lost as to the structure of this site - while I find it interesting and fantastic I just have not got to grips on how it works. Any help for inspiration would be grateful and duly appreciated.

Many thanks
Niall - Does William Nassau Holmes have a profile on WikiTree, yet? I did not see one when I did a search. You'll see your own profile is Ryan-3664 (both in your browser search bar and on the profile page right next to where it says profile manager). For William, if he has a profile, it will likely be Holmes-#. Let me know and I'll be happy to show you what I am suggesting. Thanks
