This man served in WWI for 2 years but I don't understand the abbreviations of where he served.  Here is the link to the Family Search image of his war record: Military Service Record

Can anyone help me figure out what Bat E 78 F A means?  Thank you!

My guess is Private First Class, Battery E, 78th Field Artillery (either Battalion or Regiment, depending on timing).  You can Google 78th Field Artillery.
Thank you!!
Dennis is correct. Remember that the Units that fall under a Field Artillery Battalion/Brigade are called a Battery.

Barton is correct. Private First Class battery E 78th Field artillery, Battalion.   How ever field artillery batteries could be assigned to different units in support of infantry units.  When I. Was  in the 2nd Battalion combat Team we had only one battery assigned from the 88th field Artillery battalion, no telling where the other battery’s were assigned.  1959. Iceland
