The WikiTree Challenge: Will you join a May team? [closed]

Question

We are in the midst of our most ambitious community event ever: The WikiTree Challenge.

Each week in 2021, a team of WikiTreers is collaborating on the tree of a special genealogy guest star. Our challenge is to make their genealogy more accurate and complete than it is anywhere else. Here are all the details: WikiTree_Challenge.

Can you participate in any of these weeks? 

Week 18 May 5-12 Scott Fisher, host of genealogy podcast Extreme Genes.

Week 19 May 12-19 Devon Noel Lee, the "Social One" from Family History Fanatics.

Week 20 May 19-26 Nathan Goodwin, best-selling genealogical mystery crime novelist.

Week 21 May 26-Jun 2 Gena Philibert Ortega, Director at the National Institute of Genealogical Studies.

To register, simply post an answer below (not a comment) and say something like "I want to participate in weeks 18 and 19."

You don't need to be skilled in the records of their ancestor locations. Things you can do to help:

• Write biographies.
• Add categorization.
• Add related resource links.
• Check the G2G post occasionally and notify the captain of questions.
• Keep an eye on Discord in case others need help.
• Upload pictures from the guest.
• Search a paid site you belong to for obituaries and articles.

I have been searching the internet for information on the ship Clara and her passengers that arrived in Western Australia in 1853 for some time now. I have stumbled across Wikitree a few times in the past and again a few days ago and found a page on the Clara. I would like to build on the passenger list as there isn’t one in Australia not sure about the Uk. There were 125 unnamed female servants on board who I think deserve to be acknowledged somewhere in our history. One of them was my ggg mother in law. Regards Kelly

Hi Kelly, I came across the same problem when trying to find the family of William Garvey on the 1853 "Clara". The family stories all claim they came out on the "Clara". This is what I found on Trove, but it does not seem to help you with your un-named 124-5 female servants.

The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News. Friday 9 September 1853 (page 2). Do your Trove search in WA under the phrase List of Immigrants (1853). It should come up quickly.

My man appears as Garry, William (wife and 6 children), which accords with the research I have been able to put together. I was unable to copy the article onto this message board. If you have difficulty finding the article email me colblue@live.com.au   I could copy it and send you an email. WAGS does not seem to have published the passenger list and I would not know how to myself.

My man was Irish from Tipperary it seems. I suspect your females are likely Irish lasses, offered a place on the migrant ships, to come to a new country. The girls would have found placements as domestic servants, quickly enough and a lot of them found husbands within 2 years of arrival it seems. There were convict men (T/L) in the colony, who were looking for wives and it seems most of the girls married this class.

Apart from biographies from women in the paper, it is very difficult to trace the girls once they changed their names. Often biographies mention the ship and year but not the surnames (further frustrating). I think I might have to make up my own list and keep it handy.

I have found as many of the girls as I think possible, about 40, there were 4 ships in 1853 carrying single females;

Travencore arrived 13 Jan 1853

Palestine arrived 28 Apr 1853

Sabrina arrived 13 Jun 1853

Clara 3 Sep 1853

I think I will build the lists for the other three ships as well that may give me some more leads on the Clara passengers.

There is an amazing headstone in Dardanup Pioneer Cemetery it belongs to Patrick Garvey, William’s son, not sure if you have seen it.  I will go over this week and take a photo for Patrick’s profile.

I need to get out to Dardanup cemetery when it stops raining. Being a local, I was amazed to learn so many Irish Catholics settled in the area and their children inter-married neighbours. I must have driven past so many times, not realising.

I thought I might contact WAGS regarding the "Clara" passenger list. Surely they have a project regarding this immigrant ship. This Clara seems to be a separate ship from the convict transport "Clara" which later came out several times and went on to South Australia.

If you can build a list (young females) and somehow publish it, it will be a great service for those who have descendants of the girls.
