There are currently 3 profiles for her spouse attached. None of them appear to use the correct spelling of the Last Name: Craufurd I therefore propose to create a profile with the correct LNAB and then merge all three profiles into it. Discussion?

See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Merging#Merging_multiple_duplicates

Further, I propose that this profile be protected and managed by Scotland Project to protect it from future issues.

Do not create a 4th profile. One profile can be changed before or after merges.

Any suggestion on which one that should be?  There will be disconnects of at least one child required before the merges can occur anyway.
From an Arborist view, we always say the least re-directs the better.  I didn't realize the last name being proposed is so different than the other ones.

Maybe it would be better to create a new one, so the other 3 go into the 4th, instead of some 2 going into one and then another redirect when the last is renamed.
That was my thought process, Linda, yes.  In order to maintain integrity, a fourth 'correctly named' profile would be Project Protected, as well... to keep the history intact once the merges are all made into the final profile ID.

The Help pages for Duplicates definitely state that it is never appropriate to deliberately create a duplicate. Help:Duplicates (wikitree.com)

The best option is to change the LNAB to the correct name on one of the profiles and then merge the other two into the correct one. That way there is only one re-direct for each of the existing three profiles.

In terms of project protection then it seems easy enough for the project to remove protection from one profile and then add it to another?

Fair enough.  That is how we'll proceed then.  Thanks everyone!

New profile would be Margaret (Loudoun) Craufurd, correct? So trying to keep any of the existing 3 would still need a change in LNAB, which would create a fourth profile anyway?

True, Jonathan.  It boils down to being whichever way is best to maintain the integrity of the profile histories.
