G2G: Where to find records for natives of Indonesia or Dutch East Indies, 19th cent.?

Hello everyone,

I am looking for information on a Marie Samitin, born about 1893 in Tjiamhi or Cimahi, Jawa Barat. She married my great grandfather, Hendrikus Johannes Fransen, on 1 Nov 1916, in Bandung, where he was then serving in the KNLI.

I am wondering if it is actually possible to find out anything else about her, her parents, siblings, death.

You might add the tag Indonesia to get the attention of the members of that project.

Roosjeroos page seems to be sort of reliable. But how reliable?

Use your common sense Sir.

I don't know if this would have any lists of non-Europeans.  But you could search this list just in case.  Go to https://geneaknowhow.net/digi/bronnen.html, click on the left hand side on Algemeen en Overzee, internet, then go about half way down the list to Overzeese gebiedsdelen - het huidige Indonesie. There might be something there.

@Astrid,

Very reliable. Their base are the "Regering Almanakken", kind of civil registration of Nederlands Oost-Indië. I found their records often confirmed by Delpher newspaper notices.

Yes Jan.

I never saw mistakes there as far as  I could check it out.

Thanks to Jan, Bertram, Astrid!

You guys are so helpful!!!

You are very welcome Alex. No worries.

I had to think and search again, as I was once able to look into a few "Almanakken" online.

A few of them are online available HERE at the Digitalisierte Sammlungen der Staatsbibliothek Berlin.

HERE is also a site listing sources for online research in the Dutch Indies.

Hi Alex,

You may find some more information here: Portaal Nederland <=> Wereld Indonesië

Thank you so much, Joop!

Alex:

No new additional sources, but two corrections to spelling that will help in your searches:

Correct spelling for Tjiamhi is Tjimahi

Correct spelling for KNLI is KNIL.

Good luck!

Thanks John, I didn't see those typos!

Hi Alex, You can find a lot sources about your Dutch ancestors via Archieven.nl  for example: Birthcertificate Johannes Willem van den Berg

click on the three dots in the top right corner to open a window with the link to the record (Duurzaam Webadres) .  You can copy this link and paste it in the workspace of the biography.

Notice that according to the Dutch Naming Convention, the prepositions of Dutch surnames of persons born in the Netherlands are written separate and in lowercase.  So in this case the last name should be written in the LNAB field as "van den Berg" and not "Vandenberg".  This person emigrated to New Zealand and the last name has been changed to Vandenberg.  In the Current Lastname field you can enter: "Vandenberg".

See for a detailed explanation: Dutch and Flemish Name Fields

smiley Joop

Hello Joop,

I didn't even know of archieven.nl, thanks a lot!

I see what you mean with the van den Berg / Vandenberg, I was wondering why it had changed, and now I know it was his birth name.

Only problem: the link to his birth certificate doesn't work?

Thanks very much,

Alex

In itself the link works well.  Archieven.nl has occasional malfunctions, perhaps too busy.  This evening I got a number of times an error message on links that normally always work.

Maybe tomorrow better? smiley

@Joop,

Worked for me just now. On the other hand Het Utrechts Archief, depending on Archieven.nl to display scans is displaying blank pages for days now, like these ones...

Yes, the link actually just worked, thanks heaps Joop!

@Jan,

Die link van het Utrechts Archief werkt momenteel goed bij mij. Gaat over Stukken betreffende Pierre Minuit,

Af en een klontje in het dataverkeer... zal wel goed komen,...

@Joop,

Archieven.nl is an awesome website, but is there a way to view the website in English?

This is the English version: Archieven.nl > English That is, the surrounding text such as titles are in English but the contents of the record are in Dutch.  Transcripts of the original documents.
