Kelsos on WikiTree - Annual Report

Question

I've decided to start this report early, to give other people a chance to contribute to Kelsos before the month is over. This report is part of a series from my project of tracking surnames from my immediate ancestors and those of my wife, in this report, I'm looking at people with the surname Kelso.

There are 33 Kelsos listed on Wikipedia. Of those, two have something other than Kelso as their Last Name At Birth, ten are living, and seven are fictional, leaving a net of 14 Kelsos. Of those, one (John Joseph Kelso, childrens' and animal rights activist) has a profile on WikiTree (7.1%).

Other notable people with the surname Kelso who have articles on Wikipedia, but no profiles on WikiTree are:

Since the beginning of March, 13 new profiles with Kelso as the Last Name At Birth have been added to WikiTree, leaving the total at 1,115 profiles. Of those, 57 are currently marked as unsourced, leaving 1,058 (94.9%) profiles (presumably) sourced. There was an increase of 20 (presumably) sourced profiles and a decreased of 64 marked as unsourced during the month. Currently, 158 profiles are not connected to the main tree, leaving 957 profiles (85.8%) connected. That's an increase of 12 connected and one unconnected profile during the month.

 ThePeerage.com lists 25 Kelsos. Out of those, 14 people had a Last Name At Birth that was something other than Kelso, leaving a net of 11 Kelsos. Out of those, two (18.2%) have profiles on WikiTree. Wikipedia lists 33 Kelsos. Out of those, ten are living, three had a different Last Name At Birth, and seven are fictional characters, leaving 13 net Kelsos. Out of those, three (23.1%) have profiles on WikiTree.

Both profiles for people listed on ThePeerage.com have at least one primary source, and all three profiles for people listed on Wikipedia have at least one primary source.

As of March 1, there were 1,633 WikiTree profiles for people with Kelso as their Last Name At Birth. That's an increase of 14 profiles during February.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists 61 war dead with a last name of Kelso. Out of the 36 that I have tallied so far, I have found three with WikiTree profiles (5.9%). ThePeerage.com lists 26 Kelsos. Of those, 14 have a different Last Name At Birth, leaving a net of 12 deceased Kelsos. Of those, six have WikiTree profiles (50%). The Veterans Legacy Memorial lists 407 veterans with a surname of Kelso. Of the 63 entries I have tallied so far, two have profiles on WikiTree (0.5%). Wikipedia has entries for 33 Kelsos. Of those, seven are fictional characters, three have different Last Names At Birth, and ten are living, leaving 13 deceased notable Kelsos. Of those, ten have WikiTree profiles (76.9%).

The percentage of all Kelso profiles that are connected to the main tree decreased slightly from 92% to 91.9% during February. The percentage of connected Kelso profiles from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, ThePeerage.com, Veterans Legacy Memorial, Wikipedia, and our family trees stand at 33.3%, 66.7%, 100%, 60%, and 100%, respectively.

The percent of profiles from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, ThePeerage.com, Veterans Legacy Memorial, and from Wikipedia that link back to that person's entry on that other site currently stand at 66.7%, 100%, 50%, and 100%, respectively.

The percentage of Kelso profiles from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, ThePeerage.com, Veterans Legacy Memorial, Wikipedia, and our family trees with images on them currently stand at 33.3%, 0%, 0%, 30%, and 0%, respectively.

Comments

Of the 1,633 Kelso profiles on WikiTree, 64 are currently marked as unsourced, leaving an improbably high 1,569 profiles (96.1%) at least supposedly sourced. The percentage of Kelsos from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, ThePeerage.com, Veterans Legacy Memorial, Wikipedia, and our family trees with at least one primary source stand at 100%, 66.7%, 100%, 100%, and 0%, respectively.

The average sourcing level for Kelsos from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, ThePeerage.com, Veterans Legacy Memorial, Wikipedia, and our family trees stand at 1.7, 1.3, 1.0, 2.2, and 0.3, respectively.

The number of "tallied" profiles (profiles from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, ThePeerage.com, Veterans Legacy Memorial, Wikipedia, and our family trees) with no primary sources (level 0.5) decreased by one during February. The number of profiles with one primary source (level 1) increased by three. The number of profiles with two primary sources (level 2) and with three primary sources (level 3) each increased by one.

The percentage of all Kelso profiles on WikiTree which are partially sourced barely show as a thin light orange line in the chart. For the tallied profiles, I depend on the counts in my spreadsheet, where I assign sourcing levels as I check the profiles. For WikiTree as a whole, I depend on WikiTree to get a count of profiles with the {{Unsourced}} template, and WikiTree+ (thank you, Aleš!) to get a count of profiles with the appropriate [[Category:Location,_More_Records_Needed]] category applied. But because both templates and categories are applied manually, there are a ton of profiles to which they should be applied, but haven't been yet. So that's why the tallied profiles show as a little over 30% "fully sourced", while all profiles show as over 95% "fully sourced". (This is one big reason why I keep saying that such-and-such a percentage of profiles on WikiTree is "supposedly" sourced.) As the appropriate [[Category:Location,_More_Records_Needed]] categories and the {{Unsourced}} template get applied to more Kelso profiles where they're needed, both lines should get more visible. That might seem like going backwards, but it would actually be progress, because the numbers would more accurately reflect the state of Kelso profiles. (Of course, sourcing those profiles which are unsourced or partially sourced, but aren't marked that way, would be better still, but even if you can't find any sources, marking the profiles appropriately would alert Sourcerers to profiles where their efforts are needed.)

At the beginning of this month, there were 1,222 WikiTree profiles for people with Kelso as their Last Name At Birth. That's an increase of 107 profiles since the beginning of April 2021. (I counted up profiles for all the surnames I'm tracking at the beginning of the year, to get a count on the same day to start the year, but I did not issue reports for most of the surnames. Just in case you were wondering about the extra data points in the chart.)

On ThePeerage.com, out of the 25 Kelsos listed, there are 14 people for whom Kelso was not their Last Name At Birth and one living Kelso, leaving a net of ten Kelsos. Of those, two (20%) had WikiTree profiles. On Wikipedia, out of the 33 Kelsos listed, there are three people for whom Kelso was not their Last Name At Birth, ten living Kelsos, and seven fictional characters, leaving a net of 13 Kelsos. Of those, three (23.1%) had WikiTree profiles.

Of the 1,222 Kelso profiles on WikiTree, 60 are currently marked as unsourced, leaving 1,162 profiles (95.1%) supposedly sourced. The average sourcing level for Kelsos from ThePeerage.com and Wikipedia has remained the same since last April.

The percentage of all Kelso profiles that are connected to the main tree dropped slightly (from 86.3% to 86.1%) during March. The percentage of connected Kelso profiles from ThePeerage.com remained at 100%, and the percentage of connected Kelsos from Wikipedia dropped due to the fact that I added profiles during the month which are not connected (yet).

I'm adding a new measure this month, showing the percentage of Kelso profiles which are connected to the main tree, not connected to the main tree but linked to at least one other profile, and not linked to any other profile. (This measure is made possible by Aleš's cool reports.) Hopefully, over time, you should see the percentage of unlinked and unconnected profiles going down, and the percentage of connected profiles going up.

The average sourcing level for Kelsos from both ThePeerage.com and Wikipedia dropped over the course of March due to the adding more profiles from both sites.

I have added another new measure for sourcing levels, showing the percentage of "tallied" profiles (profiles from ThePeerage.com, Wikipedia and from our family) at each sourcing level. Hopefully, over time, you should see the percentage of profiles at level 0 (unsourced) and level 0.5 (no primary sources) go down, and the number of profiles at level 3 (three or more primary sources) go up.

And still another new measure this month. This one shows the percentage of "tallied" profiles (profiles from ThePeerage.com, Wikipedia, and our family) and WikiTree as a whole which are unsourced, partially sourced (at least a secondary source), and "fully" sourced* (at least three primary sources). This chart shows the difficulty in measuring sourcing levels for WikiTree as a whole, or even a single Last Name At Birth on WikiTree: for the tallied profiles, I depend on the counts in my spreadsheet, where I assign sourcing levels as I check the profiles. For WikiTree as a whole, I depend on WikiTree to get a count of profiles with the {{Unsourced}} template, and WikiTree+ (thank you, Aleš!) to get a count of profiles with either [[Category:More_Records_Needed]] or [[Category:Profiles_with_Incomplete_Sourcing]]. (I imagine that the Categorization Project will merge those two category hierarchies eventually.) But because both templates and categories are applied manually, there are a ton of profiles to which they should be applied, but haven't been yet. So that's why the tallied profiles show as less than 25% "fully sourced", while all profiles show as more than 95% "fully sourced". (This is one big reason why I keep saying that such-and-such a percentage of profiles on WikiTree is "supposedly" sourced.)

* Yes, I know that three primary sources doesn't actually qualify as fully sourced, because ideally every fact stated in a biography should be backed up by at least one primary source, but I based my sourcing levels on the work of Paul Gierszewski, who first came up with a system for measuring how well profiles are sourced.

I've been measuring the number of profiles of people listed on ThePeerage.com and Wikipedia which contain links to those people's entries on those sites, but I hadn't been tracking how those numbers changed over time up to now. (Granted, the graph doesn't look very interesting, but there's a cool reason for that: all the profiles of Kelsos listed on ThePeerage.com and Wikipedia have links to their entries on those sites.)

Wikipedia has entries for 33 Kelsos. Of those, seven are fictional characters, three have different Last Names At Birth, and ten are living, leaving 13 deceased notable Kelsos. Of those, seven are fictional characters, three have different Last Names At Birth, and ten are living, leaving 13 deceased notable Kelsos. Of those, nine have WikiTree profiles (69.2%).

I am no longer going to put up charts showing connection status (except possibly for the surnames with the smallest number of profiles) because the number of profiles is so huge that even relatively large changes in the number of profiles at each connection status don't result in visible changes in the charts.

Hello Greg. I am related to the Kelso family. I have added several Kelso members today. My great grandmother is a Kelso and I look forward to adding more members soon.
