Help us find and improve next week's Connection Finder profiles: Philosophers

In recognition of his birthday, we're featuring René Descartes in the Connection Finder next week.

We're looking for profiles of other philosophers to feature alongside him.

Here are a few of the people we're getting started on:

Can you help with these profiles, or expand their families? Adding relatives in any direction helps with connections. Every missing relative you add will make our connections to them closer.

Who else should we feature? Do they need a profile?

All profiles we feature need a good biography and a connection to the big tree. We also want each one to have an image, and the image needs to have proper source attribution explaining why it's in the public domain or why we have the right to display it.

We can't feature everyone mentioned (we only have room for eight per week), but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

To help us plan future themes, see the 2021 Example Profile Plans post here.

Edited: We're changing things up and holding all these wonderful philosophers for another week and instead featuring Beverly Cleary, beloved children's author, this week. Please help us find other children's authors to feature here!

Mary Wollstonecraft : English - - has pic, has bio, is connected.

by Melanie Paul G2G6 Pilot (422k points)

Johanna (Hannah) Arendt : German-born, needs pic (fixed that already), bio could do with some TLC, is NOT Connected.  (This could be a joint US-Germany thing, to get her Connected.)

Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum aka Ayn Rand : Russian-born, has pic, has bio, IS Connected.

Edith Stein aka Saint Teresia Benedicta a Cruce OCD, aka Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, aka Saint Edith Stein : German Jewish - -  has pic, has bio, NOT Connected.

Iris Murdoch : Irish-born - - - no pic, has bio, NOT Connected.  Possibly more well known as an author, but that is, apparently, changing.

Hypatia aka Hypatia of Alexandria (Wikipedia link) would be a good one, but I don't know if anyone would even consider creating a profile for her (unless there is already one, and I simply failed to use the correct keywords to find her).

Unfortunately Kant, Leibniz and Schopenhauer are not connected...

But Hegel (has pic and is well sourced) and Nietzsche (has pic, not sure about the style of his biography!) are and would be good candidates.

Emanuel Swedenborg: The Swedish philosopher and mystic, with a large world-wide following.
He is well-connected, and has an image.

An effort to connect him even further started some time ago.

John Dewey (1859-1952)

Mortimer J. Adler (1902-2001)

Ayn Rand (1905-1982)

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975)

Ayn Rand and Hannah Arendt were nominated by me yesterday.  smiley

Oops, missed that! I'd vote for several of your suggestions.
I would have nominated Kant if he was connected, but he isn't and finding a connection by next Monday is far from obvious. (Descartes being the star of the week, I didn't nominate any other French either.)
I agree with featuring Rand. We've featured her in the past so her profile should be in good shape.

We're busy connecting two dutch philosophers to the tree. Not as well known as all the others but hey, everyone can broaden their horizon this way.

Gerard Heijmans ( not connected yet but we're working on it) Has a biography. He was professor at the University of Groningen. He worked in the field between philosophy and psychology. Best known for his "cube of Heijmans" used for identifying personalities

edit: Heijmans is connected now via his wife

and

Kees Kwant connected and  a written profile. He was an Augustinian, professor in philosophy at the University of Utrecht, Working on Ethics, After he left the church he specialized on the interface between sociology and philosophy, end of class society, getting older etc. He played an important role in the pastoral concilium in the 1960's and the changing ideas of catholics in the Netherlands.
