Cemeteries are among the most valuable of historic resources. They can serve as reminders of various settlement patterns, or they can reveal information about historic events, religions, lifestyles, and most importantly, our genealogy. Unfortunately, these cemeteries do not necessarily remain permanent reminders of our ancestors and past since they are subject to long-term deterioration, neglect, development activities and construction projects, and even vandalism and theft.

Through membership in the Cemeterist Project, volunteers are pledging to aid in the preservation of the world's cemeteries - serving as guardians of our history and heritage - by furthering the project's mission and goals:

  • photographing tombstones, markers, monuments, and memorials;
  • transcribing the data contained within these photographs to ancestor profiles;
  • ensuring that all duplicates are merged to the lowest number;
  • honor our ancestors by creating biographies that conform to the WikiTree Style Guide;
  • connecting profiles to the main WikiTree family tree;
  • finding and adding reliable sources for the profiles we create or edit (e.g., Birth, Marriage, and Death Records; Census Records;);
  • identifying and grouping these profiles through the use of relevant cemetery and regional categories; and
  • documenting the history of cemeteries through the use of free-space pages.

If you have any questions, or are looking for more information on what a cemeterist does, please see: Getting Started as a Cemeterist.

Otherwise, if you have your camera in hand and are ready to start working your local cemeteries - please submit your 'Answer' below and let us know what area you will be documenting cemeteries in! Answers without this information may result in longer processing times!

I am Shelly Eitniear-Cherry. I have recently moved back to Michigan, east side of the state, after the death of my husband, to be closer to my mother, on the west side of the state.  I am just getting back into genealogy.

I would like to contribute to St. Clair County, Michigan cemeteries with either photos or transcribing.

I will do cemeteries in Douglas County of Colorado. I have one complete and will started another this summer. Will we have a report card like what we had before where cemetery names were reported with who was looking after it and the progress made to the goals you stated?  Like % photographed, % connected, % transcribed, etc...
by Gurney Thompson G2G6 Pilot (451k points)
Hi Gurney, you are already signed up for the project.

I believe what you are referencing is the old Team Progress pages. In short, No, we are no longer using progress charts since the Cemeterist project is no longer working on a Team model. Using Categories and the related Cemetery free-space page, it is easy to identify how many profiles have been created and track ongoing work.

Hi, I would like to join this project.

I document tombs of some of the WikiTree profiles that I manage (Mexico, Encarnación de Díaz, Jalisco) since some years ago and this project seemed very interesting to me.

I would be willing and able to assist with field research and documentation and/or transcription for cemeteries in New Castle County, Delaware or Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
by Erin Peters G2G2 (2.2k points)

Hi Erin, Do you want to work through a full cemetery from start to finish (takes photos, transcribe and create/upload to WikiTree profiles) or do you want to focus on a specific task (such as taking pictures, or transcribing to WikiTree profiles)?

If you let me know your preference, I can get you settled in. You can read more on the full cemetery experience here, or about the elements cooperative here.

I'm not super familiar with all the variables of WikiTree profiles yet, but I'd be fine with taking pictures and transcribing, then handing off to someone more proficient to enter the data.  Or, if I can take this slowly, I would be happy to use this as my time to become more proficient with the profiles.  I'm open to whatever you may need.  :)

Welcome to the Cemeterist Project!

We have added you to the membership roster for the location you are working on.  From this roster you will be able to easily find other members who are working in the same geographical area as you.

You can also review the Getting Started Guide to learn more about what other project members are doing.

Please add me to the new cemterist project.  I had been adding burials to my local Indiana pioneer cemeteries under the previous cemetery project. Since I started entering burials in the formal project, I created a small Access spreadsheet to include the project link and website link, name, city/town, county and state and findagrave cemetery link and cemetery number of all the burials I've added.  I can easily go back, copy and paste the cemetery coding link into every profile I come along that do not have a link already added.

We have you added to the project now!

I am curious about the 'cemetery coding link' you mention, can you provide an example?
Thanks for the reply, Steve - I was unable to past my format for my Access file so I sent it to you in a private message.

I'm Lori Heath.  I do volunteer work for Wisconsin Gravestones for both Lafayette and Green counties both photos and transcripts.  I do cemetery mapping and everything else within the site including an Excel file.  I now share all data and research with 13 state and local projects. I've been listed on the Wisconsin state Historical Society Registry of Interested Persons for these 2 counties since 2017. I wound be honored to share all I have with this project as well including the additional sites I've surveyed which are Veteran memorials in Plover as well as a few pauper sites I've volunteered with such as Dane County Hospital and Home located in Verona.  I also border Grant and Iowa counties and am willing to take some requests.

I'd like to join Cemeterist project:

Of interest to me are the Downers Grove Main Street Cemetery in Downers Grove and the Lutheran Home Cemetery in Arlington Heights Illinois. I have already been working on the the Downers Grove Main Street Cemetery in WikiTree, already. My local genealogy society CAGGNI is working on a project to document The Lutheran Home Cemetery in FindAGrave and Billion Graves, so I will do the the WikiTree side of things for this project. Perhaps I can lasso some members to help on the WikiTree side of thing, also.
