Looking for father of Mercy Barnes Rooker in Bennington, Vermont

Mercy Barnes (Barnes-6309) married Joseph Rooker Jr (Rooker-127), most likely in Whitehall, New York.  I found a reference in the book Commemorative Biographical Record of Prominent and Representative Men of Racine and Kenosha Counties, Wisconsin, stating that their son's "maternal grandfather was a resident of Bennington, Vermont and died there well advanced in years".

https://books.google.com/books?id=XT8VAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA502&lpg=PA502&dq=sabrina+turner+rooker+chauncey&source=bl&ots=8X05BzXDl0&sig=x3THKjbVN13wGxdUa5ARF7Dlf_I&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Ba65VJznG8ukyAS30IBI&ved=0CDgQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=sabrina%20turner%20rooker%20chauncey&f=false

I have no other information on her father, but was hoping someone might be able to assist with finding newspaper articles, death records or cemetary records for the surname Barnes in Bennington, Vermonth between 1800-1840 (best guess).  Mercy Barnes was born in 1786.

Thank you for reading,

First off, in the book you cite Commemorative Biographical Record &c. the entry is about Joseph Chauncey Rooker (Rooker-118) who passed away in January 1906, the son of Joseph Rooker (Rooker-126) and Sabrina Turner (Turner-10561) Therefore the mention of the maternal grandfather being a resident of Bennington would be in reference to Sabrina Turner's father not to Mercy Barnes' father. I also note that the mention of the paternal grandfather indicates he "was an Englishman and was killed in Canada during the Old French Wars", which does not seem to fit any of the details of the Rooker paternal ancestors.

Incidentally, the 1821 birth on the profile for Rooker-118 does not agree with the information given in book you cited, nor in The history of Racine and Kenosha counties, Wisconsin, 649 which both agree on a date of 1822. You may also wish to add a mention of the name of the second wife of Rooker-126 that is given in this source under the entry for William L. Rooker.

Anyway... returning to your question on the parents of Mercy Barnes:

A number of unsourced internet genealogies suggest Mercy Barnes who married Joseph Rooker is the daughter of  Phineas Barnes and Mercy Provin. According to The Barnes family yearbook (vol. 3), 21. Phineas and Mercy were of West Granville, Mass. and did have a daughter Mercy although the linked work does not mention any vital dates or husbands for said Mercy. The lineage of the Mercy in this work is given as

1) Thomas Barnes (of New Haven) and Elizabeth ____;

2) Maybee Barnes and Elizabeth Stowe

3) Ebenezer Barnes and Mehitable Miller

4) Phineas Barnes and Mercy Provin

5) Mercy Barnes

Thank you for the response, I can't believe I read that wrong.  I'll take a look at the Barnes information you've provided, and hopefully that will lead to some answers.

Joseph C Rooker was my 3rd great grandfather, and my grandmother left me a newspaper clipping from his 50th wedding anniversary.  In the article, his birth date is listed as January 6th, 1821, and that was what I used as my reference.  I've seen 1822 in other locations, like his headstone, but went with the article written while hwas was still living.

I've only been on WikiTree for a couple of months, so I'm adding as I go along.  I've been working on the Rooker family, and I do have record of his second wife, Minerva Taig.  Just haven't gotten everyone keyed in yet.

I'm still learning how WikiTree works, but so far I love it.  The collaboration and assistance has already been amazing, and I truly appreciate the specific details you've provided.

Thank you,

Krista
I am working on the possibility that Mercy Barnes Rooker (born in Vermont and buried in Hatch Hill Cemetery with her husband, Joseph) was the daughter of Chauncey and Abigail Barnes. My 5th gma is Anna Barnes Delamater and she was from Hatch Hill in Whitehall, NY. I think their brother was Gamaliel Barnes (1781-1799) who died at age 18 and is buried in the Otis Cemetery in Washington County, NY. Mercy was born in 1771 (Anna in 1775). Mercy named her son Joseph Chauncey Rooker.
Hi Wendy,  thank you for the information.  Have you by chance done any dna testing?  I'd be curious to compare results, if you have.

Well I found Joseph easily enough...but could find no mention of Mercy Barnes ever exsisting??? Odd.
"Find A Grave Index," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/QV2N-4RG4 : accessed 17 January 2015), Joseph Rooker, 1822; Burial, Granville, Washington, New York, United States of America, Hatch Hill Cemetery; citing record ID 66514247, Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com.
