Can my 7th GGF be my 8th GGF also?

I had seen this information on my Fan Chart, but today when I look at this profile, BAM someone did an awesome job of having the system generate the "Relationship" right at the top of the profile page. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I must have made an error in my line and I am not sure how to find and correct it. I would greatly appreciate a little help figuring this out.

Loretta, can't you see the two lines right on the fan chart?

Yes, Julie's right.  There are a few of these on your fan chart...

(Good job, Greg, for highlighting those!  (I'd never noticed that before.))

In the back of my mind, I had be thinking about those highlighted profiles, but couldn't put my finger on just how to figure them out. Ian's app gives me a starting point.

I love these two apps. As soon as I can, I am going to have my Fan Chart printed and mount it to the wall next to my desk. :)

Loretta, that will be my extension* giving you the relationship on the profile page.  Glad you like it. smiley  (Notice that this is only for ancestors.  I would like to put all relationships up there - '4th cousin three times removed' and all that, but at the moment, it's not really possible.)

But yes, your 7th GGF can also be your 8th GGF.  Click the buttons (the green things that say 'Your G7GF' and 'Your G8GF') and you'll see the lines of descent.  You can see the same in Chase's Ancestor Explorer.  You may have many lines to one ancestor each with different genetic distances.  I've seen results giving 18th GGF and 28th GGF for the same person. If your lines go very far back, take a look at Ancestor Explorer - it shows how many lines you have to each person.  If you find some with about 15 lines or so (or even 5), take a look at the lines, and you'll often see that they're of different lengths.

* I uploaded another update just before which will make this a little better.  At the moment, if there are many lines, it can take quite a while to 'build' them and there's no kind of progress bar.  The update will show 'Building 1 line: 3 generations' ... 'Building 4 lines: 8 generations'... etc. as it progresses.  It's not perfect yet - I saw one result which gave 410 lines(!) from a WikiTreer to a medieval Scottish king in Ancestor Explorer, but my extension was showing only 351 buttons (with 351 lines of descent).  The extension defaults to showing 4 buttons with a 'Show more lines' button to see the rest of the lines so your screen isn't filled with buttons (until you click the button).  You can change this default in the settings (after you get the update).

Awesome App.! Thank you!!!!

You're welcome.  smiley

Found it! Couldn't have done it without your app!!!!

I guess you know this already:  Your third great grandparents Peter Perkins and Elizabeth Brown were second cousins once removed through Eliphaz Riley.  That "once removed" is where the generational difference comes in.

(Hugh is Eliphaz's father.)

Yes, this is well possible if there are two (or more) lines between you and him. In this one would have skipped a generation somewhere.

I have been studying the two lines and adding more sources but I am not seeing the generational skip yet. Maybe I am not looking at it correctly.

Do you have endogamy in your family? 2nd or 3rd cousin marriage. My Scottish family in Kentucky apparently intermarried for generations so one set of grandparents show up as 5thgg and twice as 6th gg. Another couple show up twice as 6th and 5th.

Short answer is yes. Working each line to make sure it is correct.

It's possible, but not likely. 1600's or earlier, probable. Most likely the 8th and 9th have the same name. Find as many factual documents for both generations. See if possibly your 9th or 8th raised another generation due to a death or family issue. Usually having birth and death certificates help greatly. Census documents, land grants and marriage certificates will help you find out where your missing that link.

Good luck in your search.

Not exactly the same thing, but my paternal grandparents were first cousins. Thus, if I have it right, each of them is not only my grandparent, but also my first cousin twice removed. I also have some kind a cousin relationship with my father (their son) but I'm a bit fuzzy on what that would be.... Shades of "I'm my own grandpaw." surprise

Second cousin once removed?
Thanks Julie!

Ian's app really helped me figure it out. I guess I will try the next ones on the fan chart.
