Can a category be deleted without reference to me as manager?

1/4th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, World War I

The category has been approved for deletion and partially deleted without reference to me as the profile manager.

This makes it impossible to reference some of the work already done, and makes it unclear to me how I can proceed to enter work which has taken several days to prepare.

I accept that significant changes are needed, to make it a sub-category within "East Yorkshire Regiment, World War I "     There is already a similar sub-category for another battalion.

Hi David,

Categories are not like profiles and the Categorization Project manages the structure. When we find errors in naming, we correct them.

You can create a free-space page for the 1/4 Battalion with that name, but if you want to add images, that page name will cause problems. I know, it stinks, but we have to work within the category naming rules. Certain characters are not allowed in category names.(I added a free-space page, which you are free to adopt and add content to).

See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Category_Names#General_Rules

The battalion categorycan be added, but the name must be altered to fit within naming guidelines. Something that has been done in the past is 1-4 Battalion or 1,4 Battalion, though it's really not ideal.

One would assume the bot is actually making that change, not just removing it. But I have no direct knowledge of that

Hi David. The reason given on the category page for deletion is "misnamed": perhaps not fully informative unfortunately.

You say it is "impossible to reference some of the work already done". In fact if you look through the change history (very small link at bottom right), you can find the previous contents. In case the category is deleted before you get to see this, I've included it below so you can copy and paste.

The 4th Territorial Battalion of the1st Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment was actually on training camp at the start of the war, but was not yet well enough organised for real warfare. This began by the training of its officers in Newcastle on Tyne.

The Battalion sailed for France 15 April 1915 at something like full strength : 27 Officers, 932 other ranks and 30 horses. A couple of days later they moved up to the reserve lines, now 29 Officers and 1023 other ranks.

=== St Julien 22Apr-4 May 1915 ===

Almost at once they were in action in the Battle of St Julien 22 April-4th May 1915.

The French force immediately adjacent to them was subjected to the first Gas Attack of the war and retreated in disorder. The East Yorkshires were moved into the front line in support of the Canadians already there.

The 4th Territorials were reduced to 11 officers and 621 men - so only 18 days after arriving in France they had lost 18 officers (7 dead) and about 400 men

Thanks Jim, that is very helpful indeed.

Overall, I have now been told that the problem was the use of a backslash in the title.

It is up and running but at present fairly empty.
