The Ogan name is Irish. Nieces of Thomas Ogan (1741-abt 1813) living in Rockingham County, VA, were told the family came to America in the 1740s from England (generally) or from near London. Thomas Ogan came to my attention when I found a record for him as a war prisoner captured with many others during a failed attempt to capture Quebec City 31 Dec 1775 during the Revolutionary War. He was recorded as Thomas Ogun (sic) of Captain Matthew Smith's 6th Company, 1st Pennsylvania Regiment. The scribe wrote his age as 24; either he lied or the scribe misunderstood his Irish brogue- he was 34.  Capt. Smith's unit was recruited from Dauphin Township, Lancaster County, PA. Dauphin became a new PA county in 1787. Thomas Ogan was imprisoned with Col Daniel Morgan of Frederick Co., VA, and in 1777 served with Morgan's Riflemen until 1781 and lived the rest of his life in Virginia.                                                                                     There are several Ogan's in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia during and after the Revolution but I have not identified the parents of Thomas Ogan. Common names within the family in that period are Peter, John, and William Ogan. The family is likely Presbyterian but there are many Quaker associations.

If he was Quaker, it is less likely that he served in the military though quite a number of them did.

I'd recommend contacting the author of this article:

"Thomas Ogan, my paternal 4th Great Grandfather, was born in 1740 at sea in the Caribbean. He was the son of Major Thomas Henry Ogan (1716-1779) and Elizabeth MNK. He married Ann Martin (1738-1813) in Frederick Virginia about 1766. They had 5 children, 4 girls, and 1 boy."
