In my research, I have discovered that Julie Ann Goodwin (Goodwin-2536) was married twice. She first married Richard Ausley (no profile yet) in 1857. They had three children: William Thomas, Emeline, and Thomas Avant Ausley. (no profile for William Thomas yet, but Emeline and Thomas have profiles with the wrong last name). Richard Ausley was killed in the Civil War in 1864.
Julie Ann then married John W. "Jack" Griffin (Griffin-3729) in 1865. Together they had four children; James Elbert, Sarah, Lonnie Earnest, and Lillie Washington Griffin. But the Ausley children were 7, 5, and 3. So, John Griffin raised them as his own. (I don't know if they were legally adopted.)
On their profiles, two children that are listed, John A. Griffin (Griffin-3730) and Elizabeth Griffin (Griffin-3731) are actually Ausleys. (John A. is Thomas Avant and Elizabeth is Emeline.)
It's an easy mistake to make. Their father was named Griffin, and the 1870 Census lists them as Griffin's. (William was already grown and not living with the family.) I made the mistake myself until I finally got it all sorted out.
So, my question is, should I change their last names to Ausley? (I know this is a big deal on Wikitree.) Or leave them as Griffins and put explanatory information in their profiles? (William's profile hasn't been created yet, so he's not a problem.)
Addendum. The problem I'm wrestling with is that Thomas Avant married and had children and grandchildren. All his children were named Ausley, and his boys' children were Ausleys as well.
2nd Addendum. Now I'm even less sure than I ever was. These may actually be John Griffin's children. So, my question, at this point, is moot.
