colour-coding

Just wondering if anyone else is coordinating colour tags across the different platforms.

GEDmatch updates have seemingly lost my colour-coded tag groups, so i have to re-do them anyway.

DNA painter tree feature has some pre-set colours....

My Ancestry buckets are with emotionally-chosen colours, not systematic...

I'm toying with the idea of using the DNA Painter rainbow for all the different platforms...

Has anyone used a systematic colour-coding?  Please share your experience!

Cheers

I find that color is often a good way to add another dimension to such things as charts.  I color-code my DNA maps, so if I ever color-coded any of my other genealogical records, I would use those colors (though I'm not sure I could, due to software limitations).  I joined Ancestry before they started some of their newer features, and have never used their tags.

But I don't see any way that color-coding could work on WT, because it is a shared tree.  What if my orange branch was your green branch?

yes, the way i think of it, AncestryDNA and GEDmatch and DNA Painter etc are my tools; my Ancestry tree is my sandbox, and i don't put stuff here on WikiTree until i'm pretty sure about it.  So i wouldn't need to colour-code here.

I try to have consistent colour coding across my DNA analysis, a lot of which I do in a spreadsheet, but I also use the same colours for my Ancestry dots. I use 4 colours for my great grandparent pairs - Blue for my paternal grandfather's parents, Green for my paternal grandmother's parents, Yellow for my maternal grandfather's parents and Pink for my maternal grandmother's parents. If I want to split matches beyond that I use darker shades of those colours (tones of navy, bottle green, orange and red). If I'm dealing with someone closer eg 1C or 1C1R I duplicate them eg a paternal 1st cousin is blue and green. Hope that makes sense! As you say I don't need to colour on Wikitree.

Yes, like you, Anne, I started with four colors for the four grandparents and then used different shades for earlier generations.  I put some thought into it before I set it up, and am satisfied with the result.

I'm not sure if this is something you're looking for, but, there are various colour palettes available in the Fan Chart app. (https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/clarke11007/fan.php)   There is one that is loosely based on the Ancestry DNA colour grouping options, as well as one loosely based on the myHeritage colour scheme.  Also, if you're really adventurous, you can create your own custom colour scheme if you want.

Hope that helps.
