"InstantCommons" linking to wikimedia images

+7 votes

Browsing wikimedia.org to find an image for a profile, I ran across a discussion about linking directly to images in Wikimedia Commons.

Is this possible (or desirable) to save wikitree some file space?  Or is it preferable to upload a copy on the wikitree profile?

(Similar question about the archive.org content, but it looks like their integration utilizes JSON and requires java, which I understand is not supported (for good reason) on wikitree.)

Hi Andrea,

Interesting idea.

We could implement the InstantCommons without much trouble, I'm sure. If people have a lot of need to use those images this could make sense. And/or if people want to upload large files that are related to more than one person, maybe Wikimedia Commons would be a better host for them.

This would be for the inline images in the biographies. For images tagged to people, used as thumbnails or backgrounds, viewed in slideshows (forthcoming), useable as e-cards, etc., they'd need to be uploaded here.
