The Cemetery Collector's Challenge is now active! The Collector's Challenge is a 3-day mini-challenge where members categorize profiles into their applicable cemetery category.

Anytime you want to compete for the Winners badge, click answer at the bottom of this post. We will use the Challenge Tracker to record the profiles we update.

The rules for this challenge are simple! Each cemetery category added to a profile counts as 1 point! The profile can be either new (or existing) - but should not have already had a cemetery category added to it.

When you save the profile, a green bar for the Challenge Tracker will appear at the top of the page. Simply click on the CHALLENGE TRACKER button and check the box for "Cemetery Collectors Mini Challenge"! Verify your WikiTree ID, add a comment, and then click "Add Action".

Will you join us in this challenge?

To check the current stats and contributions to the challenge, see the Cemetery Collector's Challenge Tracker.

Steven,

I came across a Find-a-Grave cemetery that was not added to the Minnesotan cemeteries.  I added it.  Can you look at this and tell me how to fix it so it is no longer "red"?

Category: Lac qui Parle Cemetery, Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota (wikitree.com)

I think I fixed it Phillip.
Thank you!  I have made a lot of new cemeteries and a few are coming up RED.  Some are a county cemeteries and others are within a town (is it possible that some of these small towns aren't recognized?).  I am following the same format and can't understand why.
They're red because the category hasn't yet been created. You can do that yourself by clicking on the red link and then following these instructions: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:CategoryInfoBox_Cemetery
The category for what?  I use the same template for all of them.  If the Town, State is RED, does that mean WT doesn't recognize the town? (Location:) "Category: Hazelwood, Minnesota" is red and it's where the cemetery is located base on Find-a-Grave.
This is an example of another village in Minnesota and I clicked on it even though it isn't RED.  Am I assuming I need to do this for every village that turns up RED?  Not sure it's worth it.

{{CategoryInfoBox Location

| name = Veseli, Minnesota

| parent = Wheatland Township, Rice County, Minnesota

| parent1 = Rice County, Minnesota

| image =

| wikidataID = Q7923162

| coordinate = 44.515000, -93.460000

| subcat = no

| members = profiles

| startdate =

| webpage =

| webpagetext =

}}

'''Veseli''' is an unincorporated community in Wheatland Township, Rice County, Minnesota.
Paul, I figured it out looking at another village and copying it, finding what I needed in Wikipedia.  WT is like a foreign language to me and the only way it made sense was to look at another small village (unincorporated).  Thanks for your help!

I’m in. Anyone have any tips on how they discover profiles that don’t have a cemetery category? Is there a WikiTree+ feature that I’m not aware of? Any thanks is appreciated.

I don't know the answer about a feature to find them.  I have made hundreds of profiles and didn't know about the cemetery category.  I am going back into them and adding them.  My ancestors are from very small towns so many people lived and died there making it easy to update them.

Hi Kristin, I'm sorry I missed this question! I had taken the weekend off and just ran across this comment this morning while working on the Challenge Wrap-up!

There is no one specific report that lists all profiles that do not have a cemetery category, but I do know a few tricks with WikiTree+ that can you get started for future challenges and have TONS of results!

In WikiTree+, use the NOT and CategoryWord= options to perform a search, such as:

buried NOT CategoryWord=Cemetery

This search will return around 6,041 profiles where the word buried is found (in the profile text or in a location field) but does not have a Cemetery Category attached to it.

Just keep in mind the results are not perfect, since some cemetery categories may not actually contain the word cemetery (i.e., Valley Memorial Gardens, XX, XX) but this will give you tons of profiles to review!

Also, this challenge was a large success, so we may look at running another one later this month.

I'm going to try this one with a couple of historically black cemeteries in our area. With so many new profiles getting added as part of the USBH Project, I'm thinking it may be a worthwhile endeavor.

No fair requesting the Categorization Project to create these for you either. (we are getting some requests via the form. I dont' think that's in the spirit of this challenge).

I started to create a category, but I'm really nervous about doing that. Does a cemetery category have to have a space page? Or can that come later? Also, I'm doing North Carolina cemeteries (because that's where most of my wife's relatives are), but I'm in Texas. So, I have to rely on FindAGrave for the name of the cemetery unless I can find something online about it. Is it OK to do that? I really don't want to make things worse.

I've asked for a number of new categories to be created, but I'm willing to do them myself if someone will watch over me and make sure I don't screw it up.

Addendum: I took the plunge. Somebody please tell me that I did this correctly.

I'd say you did ok. We look at the maps and GNIS quite often because the maps at Find A Grave are not great. I'd have used the name Category:Memphis Methodist Church Cemetery, Lee County, North Carolina, because by the map coordinates, it's well outside Sanford. Sometimes, it's a judgement callAlso, in the affiliation parameter, I would use Christian and not link to the category for Christianity. So, the rest of the category info box you did looks fine. You're getting there, Paul. :-)

Thanks, Natalie. I'll go back and change those. Oops - I see that you already did.
