Received My DNA Results from Ancestry Today!

I just hopped on my Ancestry account and discovered that my DNA results were completed! I can now officially say that, per Ancestry, I have the following ethnicity estimates:

1. 26% Germanic European

2. 19% Ireland with focuses in Connacht (Northern Connacht) and Munster (Dingle Peninsula)

3. 18% Scotland (Different but not surprising considering the connection between the Irish and Scottish populations throughout history).

4. 11% The Balkans (Didn't expect this!)

5. 8% England

6. 7% Greece & Albania (Not surprising after my aunt's results from a while back)

7. 6% Northern Italy (Only surprising since I only have found Sicilian Roots)

8. 5% Southern Italy

Did you find any DNA connections?  I was happy to know I connect with cousins I already knew and really pleased to connect with one I would never have found without Ancestry DNA.

I hope you find some, too!
Yes, I have 316 4th cousins or sooner and several of them have matched exactly what I knew from my own tree! I will have to sort through all of these but it seems like they all fit.

Michael, sorry if I'm introducing a pessimistic note to the discussion.

First, the ethnicity results are the least important, and most unreliable, part of your results.

Second, you may quickly find that most of your matches have not provided trees and don't respond to your messages.  For me, that problem has grown much worse in the last 2-3 years, as Ancestry went on an advertising binge and sold DNA to many people who had no intention of ever investigating their ancestry in any meaningful way.

But the good news is that those other matches, who tested earlier, are still there.  So, by sorting through your matches, you should still be able to find meaningful matches who do have trees, and who might even respond if you message them.

Another piece of good news is that Ancestry has developed some better tools recently, although they still lack what many of us want, a chromosome browser.  But the ThruLines can be useful.  Just don't accept them without verifying your matches' trees.

ThruLines are great. I agree have to verify the tree matches though

I actually found both a first cousin and a second cousin (who were both adopted) through ancestry DNA and helped them discover their connections to the family.

I also found the adopted daughter (my cousin) of my grandmother’s sister! Amazing
I also found 3 second cousins 1x removed on ancestry that let me figure out my great grandfathers birth name/ancestry.
