Why are some records in red? How do I unlock them? Padman-16

This is a record which I think had no manager and was taken over by me as it is part of my granddaughters ancestry.

I don't know how or why records would be in red.  Another member of Wikitree has alerted me to this.

I have not looked into this particular case, but it is entirely possible that the profiles have been created.  The problem is that red is used to indicate a link error, meaning that there is a link but it is to a page that does not exist.

The link is supposed to be formed in the format:

Link Text

The "LNAB-#" is the WikiTree ID of the person and the "Link Text" is what appears as the link on the view page.  The link code starts with double left bracket and has a pipe character between the WikiTree ID and the link text.  For example, if you put:

Marian Hearn

on an edit page, your name will be displayed on the view page and will be a link to your profile.

The links in that profile were not correctly formatted - they only had the person's name - so they would show as red and lead to an error page if you click them just because of that, whether or not a profile exists for that person.

Both previous answers are correct for how to fix the problem by simply removing the brackets that create the link.

.

This, in fact, should be done if a profile is not being created, because Jamie recently said deliberately creating those "red links" was not allowed.

Gaile is quite right, and my answer was too hasty. The parents Susannah and John do not seem to have profiles, but 11 of the 14 children do.

For example, Ann Padman (1811–1883) could be listed as

 • Ann Padman (1811–1883)

or

 • Ann Padman (1811–1883)

where | is a "pipe" character. Neither of those would create a red link. (At least, it can be done this way if 1883 is really the year she died; that is not mentioned or sourced on Ann's own profile.)

The "Link" item in the row

next to Ann Padman's name at the top of her profile allows you to copy Ann Padman (1811-) into your paste buffer. Then you can conveniently paste that wherever you want.

Hi Marian. The records are shown in red because the profiles do not yet exist. To get rid of the red highlighting, change (for example)

Susannah Padman

to

Susannah Padman

You can add WikiTree links again later if you create the profiles.

That's because the profiles haven't been created yet. The names are just between double-brackets (used for names) which, since they don't have an ID tag to them, makes them look red. Look at the differences, in edit mode, between the ones that are black and the ones that are red. You'll see the difference.

The way to remedy that is be either removing the double-brackets between the name, or, creating the profiles and then add the ID tag to them ( like Andréa Boudreau instead of Andréa Boudreau )

If red links appear anywhere else, it is because
a) there is an error somewhere, like a typo; or
b) if it was a living member, they may have closed their account; or
c) if it was a category, it may not yet have been integrated into the category system and you will need to ask for it to be created
